DICE Responds To Fans Angry About Battlefield 3 Console Frame Rate

DICE Addresses Controversy Over Frame Rate & Resolution Of Battlefield 3 On Consoles, Says They're Necessary Cuts For Everything They Want To Do

The war between Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 rages on, and even though Battlefield 3 has a lot of positives going for it, there’s one area that Modern Warfare 3 unquestionably has it beat: frame rate. On consoles, Battlefield 3 only runs at 30 FPS, while Activision and Infinity Ward haven’t been shy in pointing out that Modern Warfare 3 runs at 60 FPS on all platforms.

Not only that, but DICE has capped the resolution on consoles to 720p. Neither of these bullet points about Battlefield 3 are sitting very well with fans, and now DICE has addressed the controversy over their decisions.

“Console gamers shouldn’t worry about this, this topic is discussed out of proportions,” said DICE VP Karl Magnus Troedsson in an interview with GamingExaminer. “For those tech-savvy enough to have looked into the actual resolution of their console games it won’t come as a surprise that a lot of console games today do not run at 1080p but rather 720p. We’ve done this for our last games and we believe it can still look amazing.

“As for the frame-rate we’ve made a conscious decision to stick with 30 FPS on console,” he continued. “It’s not a technical problem with getting our game to run in 60 FPS but we do this in favour of the large amount of players, large scale maps, huge amount of vehicles, full on destruction and so on.”

Maybe I’m not as hardcore as most, but I’ve never really thought the difference between 30 FPS and 60 FPS was anything more than “negligible.” The same goes for the difference between 720p and 1080p – it’s going to look great regardless of which resolution DICE decided to go with, so it is really worth it to nitpick? You know how I feel, now I want to know your thoughts – is there really that much of a difference, or is this whole frames-per-second ordeal getting blown out of proportion? While Modern Warfare 3 does look pretty awesome, Activision is over hyping a non-issue. If anything DICE is helping MW III seem better than it really is as Battlefield has always been better at graphics and wide open maps — coming from its PC background. Modern Warfare meanwhile is a console game through and through. That’s not a bad thing, just highlighting differences in their target markets.

    2. Rob-L says:

Traditionally I’ve preferred COD over BF, but this frame rate thing is really a non-issue. I doubt anyone would be able to tell the difference.

    3. Liem says:

Just saying, DICE said that battlefield will run at 702P did they not. Need the extra Power to run the game. I don’t care about FPS or Res so long as the game is good

    4. Sid says:

I will take almost any game with 60fps over BF at 30fps.

Frame rates are very important, and 30 is just not good enough.
