Mozilla Develops Open Source Mobile OS Called Boot to Gecko
Mozilla is on the beginning stages of a new project called Boot to Gecko that will build a universal open source operating system for mobile devices. The project’s ultimate goal is to entice developers to make native apps for Boot to Gecko – apps that will run on the web, and across any type of mobile platform and mobile device.
As the project is very young, and the goals lofty, it’s safe to say it’ll take some time before we see the finished product if we even see it. For now, Mozilla plans to use bits of the Android OS as a launching pad of sorts. The team will then develop web APIs for the various functionalities of a mobile device such as text messaging, voice calls, Bluetooth connectivity, and so and so forth, that can be read by and ran on the web.

Naturally, Boot to Gecko is already inciting comparisons to the Chrome OS. But unlike Boot to Gecko that’s meant for mobile devices, Chrome OS is locked to netbooks.
