Netflix Gets Hit With Another Streaming Outage

Just After Expanding The List Of Devices That Can Run Netflix, A Second Outage Hits For Mobile Devices, Among Othersl

Something is seriously wrong out at Netflix. You’ll remember that, just a couple days ago, we reported on an outage that took out streaming for most of the Netflix user base. Well, a second outage took place in the wee hours of last night–or this morning depending on where you were–but this time the outage seemed largely limited to mobile devices. Reports of wider-scale outages, however, existed.

Starting last last night (or early this morning), a variety of customers were reporting that they were unable to stream with their mobile devices, and in some cases, also with their PCs, Macs, and even some Blu-ray players such as Samsung and Vizio. Calls to Netflix’s automated help line said that the company was aware of the problem and working to fix it, but neither Netflix’s Twitter nor Facebook feeds have anything about the problem. A quick check of Netflix’s Facebook page mentions Monday’s outage, but the last post is about the Android device expansion we brought you yesterday. The Twitter feed seems relatively mum as well.

It’s strange that there should be two outages so closely spaced together, and it seems like there’s less information coming out of Netflix with every passing outage. And of course, it certainly doesn’t help Netflix in the least that said outages both hit within easy memory of the announced price hikes to come in a few weeks. How much damage this will actually do to Netflix as a result, well, that’s anybody’s guess. Obviously, two outages in a week are an inconvenience, but will it be inconvenience enough to get people to switch to someone else? Maybe not, granted, but will some look at this as a sign of larger troubles to come? When you have regular, reliable service for weeks on end and then suddenly a pair of outages hit almost back to back, some will likely start wondering.

And are you among them? I love being able to open up the floor like this, so here’s the question. Are two outages this close together enough to get you to switch? Were you even affected? We definitely want to hear from you on this, so head down to the comments section and tell us what you think!

I canceled my service. I still have TVDevo for streaming Movies + TV, for much cheaper than what Netflix offers. Also looking into Blockbuster-by-mail.

this is horrible it is 100 degrees in chicago and all i want to do is watch netflix after i worked a 12 hour day on a delivery truck with no air. I’m very disappointed in you netflix. you are breaking my heart

    3. Meg–interestingly, so am I. Blockbuster doesn’t have near the selection that Netflix does, but oddly, they have a lot of stuff that Netflix doesn’t. And of course the fact that Blockbuster offers games appeals. I might well do a top seven on that sometime.
