U.S. Samsung Galaxy S II (Function, Attain, Within) Release Date Now August?
Samsung’s 2011 Android flagship device is, so far, the Galaxy S II, and while it’s selling already very well in various worldwide markets, the device is still missing in action in the USA. Samsung could have gotten a significant lead in Galaxy S II sales in the U.S. too, ahead of the next iPhone, but the carriers have not been that anxious to launch the new Galaxy S II yet.

On the other hand Samsung may want to time the Galaxy S II launch closer to the iPhone 4S/5 release date, although that may not be the best of moves. Apple proved yesterday that its 1-year old iPhone 4 and 2-year old iPhone 3GS are still tremendous devices with the Cupertino-based company selling 20 million of them in the quarter ending in June.
On comparison, last time we counted Samsung’s Galaxy S sales we found about 10 million Galaxy S unit sales for 2010 with that number growing well into 2011, but not to significant levels. Sure the Galaxy S II may sell a lot better than its predecessor, especially in the USA considering the popularity of smartphones in general, and of Android in particular, as an affordable and competitive iOS alternative.
Three of the Big Four carriers in the USA, AT&T, Verizon and Sprint, are planning to sell a Galaxy S II version while T-Mobile may not offer the device to its customers. We have three Galaxy S II names of these three carriers, the AT&T Attain, the Verizon Function and the Sprint Within, and each one of them has, at some point on another, been spotted in a certain rumor.
Today we hear, from Shin Jong-kyun, President of Samsung’s mobile division that the Galaxy S II will hit the US market at some point in August. No specific details have been offered yet and we have no actual release dates or pricing details for you. We don’t even know whether Sprint and/or Verizon will get their Galaxy S II version with WiMAX/LTE support, but there’s plenty of time to figure all that out, so stick around!
