OS X Lion Upgrade: Some People Charged Multiple Times for Mac App Store Lion Purchase

Apple Issues Refunds for Multiple Lion Download Charges; How Many Copies Did You Unwillingly Pay For?

You are probably more than aware by now that Apple launched today its latest Mac OS version, OS X Lion, via the Mac App Store. Upgrading to Lion is pretty simple once you make sure you meet the hardware and software requirements to proceed with the 3.5GB download. But while the process is pretty easy, some folks found out, the hard way, that it’s far from flawed.

RazorianFly reports that some Apple customers were change twice, or even three times for the same Mac OS X Lion update, that’s even if each purchased copy can be installed on up to five devices you own. This certainly must be some sort of issue with Apple’s Mac App Store Lion purchase process, but the good news is that Apple is taking care of it.

In case you have been charged more than once for the Lion upgrade then Apple will refund the extra fees you paid (see screenshot below) and in case this sort of thing keeps occurring I’m sure that a Mac App Store fix or some extra instructions will be issued in order to further streamline the Lion upgrade.

In case your Internet connection is acting up, or you’d rather have your actual, physical copy of Lion safely stored on a DVD or a stick then you should be waiting for Apple to launch the $69 OS X Lion USB memory stick at some point in August. We’re looking at a price bump here, as Apple would also sell you the flash drive with OS X Lion on board.

But let’s hear it from you, early Lion adopters! Have you upgraded to Lion? Have you encountered any similar payment issues when upgrading your various iOS devices to Lion? Have you been charged more than once for the download? Has Apple solved your issues?

I’ve been charged 9 times. I deleted my payment from itunes to stop this from happening!!

    2. JKF says:

I have been charged 3 times and refunded 3 times!

    3. Cody says:

      I’ve been charged 15+ times.

    4. Autumn says:

I had this problem as well… six or seven charges, though most of the refunds have come through.

    5. Dave says:

I got hit 7 times before my bank froze my card

    6. Joe says:

I was charged 9 times and paypal said that unfortunately it must go through the bank (so, I get charged the full 9 times) and then when the refund is processed, I can pay it. I feel sorry for those who get charged many times and will have to cover that full amount and don’t have enough in their bank account.

    7. Joe says:

Paypal Security recommends contacting your bank for a stop payment because all multiple charges will be processed and affect your account (until you get the refund).

    8. mhb says:

      7 and counting!

    9. Opie says:

      47 times! Steve, WTF?

    10. Steven says:

      9 times

    11. kndy says:

      For me it was 10x.

They will take the money out but then it takes about 3 working days for the Refund to post on PayPal. Once you get that, deposit it back to your account, it will take another 3 working days.

I talked to PayPal and if you have the money in your account, just wait and deposit it back because banks will charge a fee for stop payment (and these are per case and if you were charged 5-10x’s, why pay for iTunes mistake).

I feel for those though, who don’t have much money in their account and were charged multiple times. The worst thing is that I contacted iTunes Store through their 24-hour e-mail and they didn’t respond. No apology…hell, send me a free iTunes card for my frustration…lol…they can just acknowledge it.

This is unfair to the consumer and unfortunately, we’re screwed no matter what. Sure, you get the refund but your out the money for nearly a week in your account.

I was charged 7 times and refunded 6 times.

What a fiasco. This does not build confidence in Apple’s ability to run a business or in e-commerce in general when you see how easily your money can be taken from you.

Apple needs to take care of the customers that have been inconvenienced by this problem. Some kind of apology, explanation, and a financial renumeration for the hassle.

    13. Mike says:

I bought a Mac mini on Thursday from the Apple Store w/ Lion preinstalled. I decided to take the App Store for a spin, so I bought Angry Birds for the Mac (don’t judge!),

Anyway, it was $4.99 plus tax, thus $5.29. That $5.29 charge has been charged and refunded from my iTunes account (which is connected to PayPal) twice now. No actual money seems to have exited my bank account though – my PayPal is connected to my checking via verified bank draft.

Strange. I hope those stupid birds don’t steal all of my money before payday.

    14. Mike says:

Quick update – my bank account now shows three charges and the money is already gone from the account. I called my bank to flag these charges, but they say I need to wait for them to “post” before disputing them. What a crock. I have to take extra steps to get BACK the money that was taken erroneously from me? I’m going to switch to a credit card on my iTunes account to guarantee this crap never happens again – I can get the charge reversed in that case.

Not looking too good for people who want to buy stuff from you online, Apple. Get it together!

    15. Jared says:

Anyone know if there’s somebody we can complain to about this? I was charged 9 times for my copy of Lion. I reported this to iTunes support and they asked me to switch my payment to a credit/debit/gift card which they used to charge me a tenth time. So now I’m out almost $300 while I wait for my refund. I have bills, which are due now. This seriously screwed me over.

    16. Chris Smith says:

Thanks for all the updates guys, keep them coming. We’re certainly interested to hear more about this OS X Lion payment issues.

    17. Robert says:

charged for Lion 9 times with overdrafts on my unexpected billings to a dedicated paypal acct linked to iTunes that has worked well for many years.

Paypal blames apple and apple blames PP…I have $34 x 9 in overdrafts and I know I did not authorize these transactions

    18. francine says:

We have one ITunes account. I bought Lion and was charged for it. When my husband wanted to update to Lion he had to pay for it too. Now my laptop runs slower, freezes and has serious issues with Angry Birds. The program can be closed but all of a sudden I hear the birds in the background. Or I’ll be playing the game and the top menu bar appears. I guess I’ll have to spends a few hours on the phone to resolve these issues. I’m thinking of uninstalling Lion and going back to Snow Leopard.

    19. francine says:

Sorry, ITunes should be APP store account in above post. Duh.
