Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet Unveiled

Lenovo's ThinkPad Android Tablet is Aimed at Business Customers; Will Come With Gorilla Glass & Data Encryption

Business are warming up to tablet computers, but most tablets these days are more oriented toward the consumer rather than the enterprise. Lenovo’s upcoming ThinkPad tablet aims to change this, with enterprise-grade tools that any IT department would find appealing.

Enterprises are often concerned about a few things when it comes to portable devices, foremost of which are security and compatibility. Businesses want to make sure the data is secure, whether residing locally on a portable device, or en route to the network. Users are also concerned about compatibility with existing IT systems.

Lenovo’s upcoming ThinkPad Tablet aims to address the needs of the enterprise user by implementing features that make the tablet secure and compatible with cloud-based office systems. The tablet is almost identical with Lenovo’s other Android offerings, with the following features:

  • 10.1 inch capacitive touchscreen at 1280 x 800 pixel resolution
  • 1GHz dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor
  • Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Optional 3G
  • HDMI
  • 64 GB storage
  • Android Honeycomb 3.1

However, the ThinkPad Tablet has a few extras up its sleeve. The tablet has a standard-sized USB port and SD card reader for expansion options. The tablet can also encrypt the data on the SD card for additional security. Lenovo also offers users a free 2 GB cloud-storage for saving and syncing files through the network.

The ThinkPad tablet is also a bit tougher than the usual Lenovo tablet, with the IPS display screen being built with Corning’s Gorilla Glass. And as an additional option, users can manipulate the touchscreen through a capacitive stylus tucked into the chassis. The ThinkPad tablet also has hardware buttons at the side of the case, which can be used for navigation and screen-orientation settings.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet is already up for pre-order at a starting price of $499. The tablet will ship to US customers starting August, and then to the rest of the world during 3Q of 2011.
