Vigil Games: Wii U 'Has Plenty Of Horsepower'
When the buzz from the Wii U’s new touchscreen controller wore off sometime after E3 2011 wrapped, many gamers were left wondering what’s actually under the hood of this new console. We’re now more than a month out from E3 and that still isn’t entirely clear, but according Darksiders 2 developer Vigil Games, the Wii U has enough power to hold its own against the Xbox 360 and PS3.

“There’s plenty of horsepower there, so we’re not going to have to make any visual concessions at all for Darksiders 2,” said game director Marvin Donald in an interview with Eurogamer. Darksiders 2 is going to be a launch title for the Wii U, and Vigil has had plenty of great things to say about ever it since they made an appearance during Nintendo’s E3 press conference.
When asked how Darksiders 2 on Wii U would compare to its brethren on the Xbox 360 and PS3, Donald replied “At a minimum on par, for sure.” While Donald said that they’ll take advantage of the extra power if the Wii U turns out to be a monster of a machine, his praise did come with a little disclaimer: “It’s probably going to be the same graphically, regardless of any minor or major horsepower improvements on the Wii U.
“It’s going to be a direct port. That’s what we’re planning on. But that’s based off of what we believe the hardware’s going to be like.”
As far as the Wii U’s controller is concerned, Donald says that they’re doing the “obvious stuff” with it so far, for instance sticking the inventory screen or map down there. Thinking up special gameplay features, however, has proven to be somewhat difficult, with Donald admitting that they “haven’t taken that step yet.”
Even though we don’t know precisely how powerful the Wii U will be, it’s nice to hear third party devs singing its praises. As for me, I’m approaching the Wii U with a sense of cautious optimism, but I really hope that Nintendo can turn things around in terms of actual third party support with this next console.
