CNN Now Streaming Online & To Mobiles 24 Hours A Day

CNN Begins Streaming 24 Hours A Day, Touts Itself As Being The First To Do So

CNN has announced their latest offering — 24 hour streaming news. Though, while it sounds good, essentially what they have is a unique way of announcing a service that sits behind a paywall.

You see, the new 24 hour a day streaming CNN service will be available in the same manner that HBO Go is. And for those who may have missed that, it is available for those by way of the TV Everywhere setup. In other words, you will need to login with the user ID that you have with your cable or satellite provider in order to get access.

But enough with the bad portion because overall — this sounds like a good perk for those who already get CNN, especially those looking to stream on the go using a mobile device. At present the 24 hour a day streaming CNN will be available on computers as well as the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

As to who can get access. According to the details we received from CNN, that includes “approximately 50 million households with subscribers to participating pay TV providers, including:  AT&T, Comcast, Cox, DISH Network, Suddenlink and Verizon.”

The computer streaming is done by way of the CNN.com website and the mobile streaming comes by way of version 1.2 on the iPhone and iPod touch app and version 1.1 on the iPad app. In order to start watching, those looking to watch on the web should surf on over to cnn.com/video and then click the “Live” tab. The mobile users, just make sure you have the latest versions of the app loaded up. Otherwise, both the web users and the mobile users will then have to login “through their cable, satellite or telco provider with a username and password.”

And lastly, nothing in terms of when other mobile apps will arrive, though CNN did make mention that “a principal goal for CNN is to make more of our content available to more people on more platforms.” Given that, we suspect we will be seeing other apps, maybe for Android and hopefully for webOS, Blackberry and Windows Phone 7.
