JailbreakMe 3.0 “Essential Update” Now Available Through Cydia; Fixes Known Bugs

Cydia Update to Fix Various JailbreakMe 3.0 Issues: Camera Connection Kit, BiteSMS or Cydia Issues] (u

JailbreakMe 3.0 was launched only last week, and while most iOS device owners were able to quickly use it to set their iDevices free (especially the iPad 2, which wasn’t jailbreakable up until now) there were various complaints regarding certain JailbreakMe bugs, which some of our readers have also encountered following the jailbreak process (here’s a step-by-step tutorial on how to use JailbreakMe 3.0).

Today we tell you that there’s an “Essential Update” available through Cydia which should correct, at least in theory, issues such as Cydia’s disappearing act or various uses with Apple’s Camera Connection Kit accessory or various apps like BiteSMS.

How do you get the update? Well, what you don’t have to do is jailbreak your device again using JailbreakMe 3.0 (unless you haven’t jailbroken it of course). But you will have to open Cydia and wait for it to load the message below (which you can see in the screenshot above):

One or more essential packages are currently out of date. If these upgrades are not performed you are likely to encounter errors.

Simply click on “Upgrade Essential” or “Complete Upgrade” and you’ll get a confirmation page (image above). Click confirm and Cydia will run the update (screenshots below) and, voila, your JailbreakMe 3.0 jailbreak is updated. Needless to say, an active Internet connection will be required to install the update.

Now if problems persist, especially the Cydia disappearing act that some of you have experienced, Comex advised via Twitter to contact him with more details:

If, after today’s update, Cydia still disappears when you try to jailbreak, I’d appreciate if you used the iPhone Configuration Utility (http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/enterprise/) to get the Console output and emailed that to me (comexk@gmail.com)

With over 2 million jailbreaks already performed using JailbreakMe 3.0 Apple must be pretty annoyed with the fact that the iPad 2 has also been jailbroken, so an iOS 4.3.4 firmware update may very well be just around the corner to prevent such jailbreak attempts at least on Apple’s newest device (all the other devices that can run JailbreakMe 3.0 can also be jailbroken with other tools, no matter what iOS version they would run).

Update: It seems the update will brick your CDMA iPhone 4, so Verizon customers may want to stay away from it until further notice. Comex’ recent tweet reads: “looks like my update messed up verizon iphones” so a new update should be released in the near future.

Do not update it on the Verizon iPhone. It froze and I need to do a complete restore, yet again because of this jailbreak. It was confirmed on comex’s twitter page that the update messed up the Verizon iPhone.

Stay away from the update and the jailbreak until the issues are ironed out.
