HTC to Release Unlocked Bootloaders in August
HTC has previously promised to release unlocked bootloaders so that users can unlock their own smartphones. The company has announced that they will be releasing the bootloadrs for certain phones starting this August.

HTC will be doing a phased rollout of their unlocked bootloaders starting with the HTC Sensation, which will be followed by a release of the unlocked bootloader for the T-Mobile Sensation 4G and the Sprint EVO 3D. While users can be assured that unlocking tools will be coming, HTC will initially roll out its “maintenance release,” which is the first step to unlocking. HTC will then release its actual unlocking software by September.
While the initial set of smartphones is a bit limited, HTC promises to release unlocking tools for other smartphone models, as well. Of course, this will have to be done in coordination with US carriers that subsidize their handsets. We suppose that handsets that come bundled with contracts might not be included in these maintenance releases and unlocking tools. Still, HTC plans to include the unlocking tools and unlockable bootloaders in new smartphone shipments in some markets.

Verizon Wireless Rolls-Out Some New Tools To Help Customers Better Manage Data Usage, Keep Track Of Content Purchases & More]

Google/Android, HTC and other phone makers should stop making special OS versions for specific phones and carriers that try to lockout or make customers pay for features and capabilites that are built in to the phone already (ie. wireless hotspots). They should make it illegal for carriers to make any changes to the operating system. Look at windows, it’s the same OS on all different brands of PCs, smartphones are just smaller pcs, why should they be any different? You don’t see pc manufacturers with different versions of windows locking out features or saying “This version of windows is only compatible with this specific isp, you can only use this grapics card, this printer, and your not allowed to play World of Warcraft, if you want to play WoW please purchase our special Windows Wow edition PC! (I hope i’m not giving microsoft and pc manufacturer’s any ideas, lol) The phone manufacturer pays to put hardware features in phones which we customers have to pay for and present the phones to carriers who then decide they don’t like the features and lock them out or charge more for them when we already had to pay more for the phone than we should have to cover the manufacturer’s cost of putting the features in the phones they made, and then we can’t use the things we already paid for. They should also try and make it illegal for carriers to try and modify the operating system itself. Customers already specifically pay and/or have paid for phones just because they have or had certain features, they shouldn’t have to pay more, especially if these services were free to use when they originally purchased the phone. My free verizon hotspotting was just recently locked out and now costs $15/month to use unless i risk rooting and damaging my phone. They should make one OS compatible with all phone models and refuse to make special OS’s for carriers and tell them if they want to lock out, remove, or charge for products that they built into the phone hardware then they need to hire their own programmer’s and do it themselves if they can’t make it illegal for the carrier’s to attempt doing so in the first place, and then try as hard as they can to make it impossible (or as complicated as possible) to try and add restrictions to the phones by making every process and sub routines dependent on the phone being open, rooted, unlocked etc etc…if they did this and let customers know that they are making attempts to stop corporate/carrier greed (which got us in this economic mess in the first place, not just carrier’s but i mean all greedy corporations got us in this mess) then this would make customers more loyal to their OS brand, phones, and apps. Carrier’s have already placed bandwidth limits on their data plans so customers using a hotspot isn’t going to cost the carrier any more money than they are already paying for each customer’s alloted bandwidth, they don’t need to worry about customers abusing their hot spot priveleges. They are getting too greedy, especially verizon and at&t. $15 a month is ridiculous to pay for some customers who need this feature and specifically paid to buy a phone capable of it but may only use it once a week or a couple times a month.
