Two iPhone 5 Models Coming in September, One Cheaper Than the Other
In what would be a first in Apple’s iPhone-manufacturing history, the company is said, more and more often, to have two brand new models to unveil this fall. An entry-level iPhone 4S and a high-end iPhone 5, although we have no idea on how these devices are going to be named.

We’ve heard it all before, how Apple wants to be able to better compete against cheap Android handsets, that are currently available from so many carriers worldwide, and how this year we could see a cheaper iPhone get official this fall. And it looks like more unofficial sources are confirming such a product.
Apple will therefore sell a high-end, all new, iPhone 5 model that will probably retail for the same prices the iPhone 4 sells for, subsidized or not, and a low-end, iPhone 4S, that could be cheaper than the current iPhone 4, when sold for full price, and maybe just a little more expensive than the iPod touch.
Such a cheap device would probably sell like hot cakes and Apple wouldn’t even have to bother negotiating with carriers for it anymore. The device could be bundled with pre-pay offers from any worldwide carrier, and it would give cheap Android smartphones a run for the money.
I keep referring to such an iPhone 4S as a low-end device, but don’t be fooled; as such a device will offer quite a punch too. Let’s remember the Motorola Triumph, a great device, that packs terrible specs and features, and that currently sells for $299.99 from Virgin Mobile. That’s the full price for a device that can definitely compete against the iPhone 4, and plenty of other 2010 Android smartphones, yet we call it “affordable”, “cheap” or “low-end.”
Apple’s iPhone 4S could offer a mesh of features from the iPod touch 4G (slim case, overall design and battery size), the iPhone 3GS (camera and RAM) and iPhone 4 (processor and iOS 5) and therefore become the cheap iPod-like product that would sell fly of the shelves as anyone interested in owning an iPhone but not interested in forking over a chunk of cash to carriers for a subsidized iPhone 5 (high-end) model would have an affordable model within reach.
Some may say that Apple could simply repackage the iPhone 3GS as a cheaper iPhone 4S model, but that wouldn’t exactly be a new device, would it? And we’d certainly love our entry-level handset to be a new smartphone, capable to fight off all the other new Android devices out there. But let’s hear your thoughts on the fifth-generation iPhone. What kind of device would you rather buy? An entry-level one or a high-end device?

I thought it would be a big blow for iPhone users since iPod Touch users are also capable of doing such abilities. In fact, there are also rumors that Apple is releasing iPod Touch 5th gen with 3G (like iPads). Hence, people would either downgrade to iPod Touch with 3G plan or iPod Touch sale would go down since most of the consumers would turn to the cheap version of iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S. It is a smart move yet critical since one aspect of the market would fluctuate depending on the market.
Once an iPhone 4S (similar to the iPod touch) becomes real, then it’s safe to say that some people will prefer it over the iPod touch. Therefore the iPod touch would see some decrease in sales, although it probably won’t disappear. As for 3G support for the iPod touch 5G, we talked about that one earlier here on TFTS. If Apple is adding 3G data support to the touch then it’s already a VoIP phone.
Terrible specs on the Triumph? That’s the first time I’ve heard that. I see you have low-end in quotes. Mind sharing where you plucked that gem of a quote? Surely it’s taken out of context because the Triumph certainly isn’t anyone’s definition of a low-end Android phone.
I, personally, would invest in the “high end” iPhone 5. I already have a 3GS and its been great, but want the top of the line smartphone that keeps me “ahead of the curve.” As for the iPhone 4S decreasing sales of the iPod touch, there is always going to be that crowd of people that already have an Android that they love or a non-smartphone that they can afford that still purchase an iPod touch for their music. Whatever happens, I’m holding out for the iPhone 5, hopefully this September or October.
About Virgin Mobile’s Triumph from Motorola: The 2nd generation Snapdragon processor of the does 720p flash video smoother than any other “current” dual core processor. It’s GPU is better than these hyped Tegra 2 ones. Additionally, it can be overclocked to 2 Ghz, so it’ll be even faster. Conclusion: Just because it’s newer doesn’t mean its faster / better.
When the software and hardware is optimized, people have already looked to the newest Android that sounds faster. Meanwhile, some of us get a bargain, not even really knowing how much it is one awesome bargain!
I meant terrible in a good way here, and the point I was trying to make is that the Triumph isn’t a low-end smartphone, even if it comes with a low-end smartphone kind of a price.
I’m getting the Motorola Triumph. They can keep their way overpriced iPhones with the wallet gouging contracts. People who spend a bundle on a cell phone either have too much money to burn or not enough common sense to wisely spend what they have.
Is not going to happen, it would blur the line between iPhone and iPod. Also, carriers would not go for, since they prefer complex billing practice. Furthermore, for most people is not the price of the device, but the cost of high data.
