Verizon Wireless: Tiered Data Plans Went Live This Morning

As Expected, Verizon Ditches Unlimited Data Plans & Ushers In Usage-Based Plans

Verizon had made this news official earlier in the week, however as of this morning the unlimited data option (for new customers) is no longer available. Basically, that means any new Verizon customer will have to opt for one of the newly listed usage based plans. Yup, tiered data has arrived at Verizon.

That being said, while some may think this was a bad move for Verizon. Well, it may have been, however they also did quite a bit to ensure that I am going to remain a customer for a long time. Personally I use a decent amount of data and do not want to lose that unlimited plan. Plus, tiered data is becoming the norm with US carriers at this point and switching to another is not going to benefit me all that much.

Anyway, in terms of the new offerings, those break down as follows;

Data only:

  • 2GB for $30 per month
  • 5GB for $50 per month
  • 10GB for $80 per month

Data and Mobile Hotspot:

  • 4GB for $50 per month
  • 7GB for $70 per month
  • 12GB for $100 per month

Basically, you have the regular data plans and then the plans with Mobile Hotspot included. The Mobile Hotspot plans all add in the extra 2GB of data and increase in price by $20. All said and done, this will likely upset many, however we stand by what Verizon has stated in that this will not affect a vast majority of their customers.

Otherwise, the overages come priced at $10 for every 1GB and Verizon will be letting current users not only keep their unlimited data plans, but also upgrade to a new smartphone without having to worry about losing their unlimited data.

Bottom line, if you are a new customer that had been waiting to come to Verizon for the recently released Motorola Droid 3 — you are coming into a world of tiered (usage-based) data plans.
