iPad Packs Massive Array Of Apps One Year After Release

It really hasn’t been long since the iPad first emerged on the scene and gave us the start of the tablet revolution, and though it’s spawned a legion of imitators, it’s also spawned something else: a huge number of new apps in just over a year’s time.

How huge, you’re doubtless wondering by now? Turns out the iPad now boasts better than 100,000 total apps. This may not sound like a lot, considering the sheer variety of apps that lurk out there, but considering the timeline progression, it suddenly looks even more impressive.

First, the iPad didn’t even launch until April 2010, and since this is now June (almost July, really) 2011, the time it took to go from “What’s an iPad?” to “Over 100,000 apps for it!” was just over one year. Now further consider that, just a month before its first birthday, it had 75,000 of those apps in place. That in turn means that fully a quarter of its total app base arrived in just the last three months or so.

And indeed, it’s not hard to see where this development came from, either–looking at things like the growing number of print mags that decided to have iPad equivalents, the still-running The Daily, and a host of other such journalism luminaries migrating there. The recent jumps in the epublishing sector have been tailor made for iPad, and much like we said in our big ereader review a few months back, a tablet as good as the iPad makes a fine platform for reading ebooks with too.

For the most part, these apps have been good ones, too. Some may be concerned about the quality in a field that big, but I haven’t found much cause for concern myself, and I enjoy browsing the App Store as much as the next gearhead.
