HTC Desire Gingerbread Build Being Tested
HTC faced various online complaints when they announced the HTC Desire could not be upgraded to Gingerbread due to space constraints. Since retracting their announcement, HTC engineers have been trying to find ways to do the upgrade.

HTC’s engineers say they could not fit both the HTC Sense UI and Gingerbread into the Desire’s internal storage, and had to make some cuts in the proprietary firmware additions, just so the handset can be upgraded. While some carriers announced they will be supporting a vanilla Gingerbread installation, the folks at HTC have been doing the software cuts to fit some HTC Sense functionality, and it looks like they have a working version of Android Gingerbread. HTC engineers are currently testing this Gingerbread build, as announced on their Facebook profile.
Hi all- We’re excited to share that we are testing our build of Gingerbread for HTC Desire and will start doing quality assurance for it this week. When we have an update on availability we’ll post another announcement. Thanks for your support!
The team will be doing quality assurance work, and might have a working build within a few weeks’ time. We do wonder if someone would leak out a beta build for enthusiasts out there to test out, as what usually happens when manufacturers are delayed with pushing updates. It’s good for HTC to make good on their promise to work on the update, though.
