Droid 2 Global Gingerbread Update Coming After Droid 3 Launch

Motorola to Issue the Droid 2 Global Android 2.3 Update Only Once the Droid 3 Is Official; Droid X2 Not Similarly Blessed

A few days ago a new rumor detailing Motorola’s Gingerbread progress for a bunch of Droid-branded smartphones said that Verizon has basically rejected all existing Android 2.3 builds for those handsets (Droid 2 Global, Droid X2, Droid Pro) and that Moto had to fix various bugs before the carrier would roll out the update.

Today, thanks to the leaked spreadsheet detailing the specs and features of the Motorola Droid 3, which we have just seen earlier, we know that the Gingerbread build for the Droid 2 Global is only going to be released once after the Droid 3 launch:

Android 2.3 expected to be available soon after Droid 3 launch.

The news is as official as it can be considering that we’re looking at a footnote in a leaked document that shows a comparison between various Verizon handsets, including the Motorola Droid 3, Droid 2 Global and the Droid X2.

What’s surprising though is that the same footnote is not available for the Droid X2 also in that comparison chart. The Droid 3 is expected to ship with Android 2.3 on board out of the box. The Droid 2 Global and the Droid X2 currently have Android 2.2 Froyo running under the hood, and since there’s no footnote for the Droid X2 one can only assume that the Droid 2 Global will be the next handset in line when it comes to Gingerbread updates.

Naturally we’ll be looking for official press releases from Verizon to further detail any Android 2.3 roll out plans for current Droid-branded smartphones before we can draw any conclusions. Besides the Motorola Android handsets sold by Big Red there are plenty of other smartphones in Verizon’s lineup waiting for the Gingerbread update, including other notable devices like the HTC Thunderbolt or the Samsung Droid Charge. So, hang tight, Droid 2 Global owners, as we may have some good news for you at some point in the following weeks.
