Mojang’s Next Game Will Follow Minecraft’s Release Schedule [Scrolls Will Follow Notch's Development Philosophy Of 'Release Early, Update Often']

It seems that Minecraft developer Mojang wants to get their next game into your hands as quickly as possible after Minecraft is released later this year. Speaking to Gamasutra, Mojang said that Scrolls, a virtual TCG that’s sure to be at least as addictive (if not more) as Minecraft, will follow the same release schedule Notch has been using during Minecraft’s development.

That means there will almost certainly be prolonged alpha and beta periods that stretch over a couple of years before the game is actually released. “With our new game, Scrolls, we’ll follow the same formula as Minecraft,” said Mojang’s Daniel Kaplan. “That means we’ll release the game very early.” It also means that earliest adopters are likely to see the game change drastically as it goes from its alpha testing stage to the finished product, which may be worth the price of admission in itself.

Kaplan also said that, at the moment, Mojang has a total of five people working on Scrolls. “That sounds like a small team, but it’s very big for us,” he added. Indeed, Minecraft was developed solely by Markus Persson, who enlisted the help of Jens Bergensten only recently. So, placing five people on one game indicates that Scrolls is be a pretty big endeavor for the team at Mojang, which in turn likely spells disaster for productivity everywhere.

When it comes down to it though, I’m all about Minecraft and I’ll probably be all about Scrolls when it releases. I hate to think of how much much hurt a virtual trading card game is going to put on my wallet, but this is likely a “day one” purchase for me nonetheless. What about you? Will be moving onto Scrolls once Mojang releases the alpha, or will you be sticking with Minecraft and forgoing the TCGs? Let us know in the comments section below!
