Android Activations Now Topping Half-A-Million Per Day
While there will likely always be the wars between fanboys (and girls), regardless of the camp that you have settled into, it is sort of hard to deny that Google is activating quite a bit of devices each and every day. Granted, that does not mean that other platforms are not worthy, but you do have to give some credit where credit is due.

That being said, lets take a quick trip back to the end of last year, roughly 6 months back — at that time Google was touting how they were activating 300,000 devices each and every day. Then in May, during the Google I/O conference they were touted as having reached 400,000. And well, flash forward back till the present day, and it looks like that number had jumped significantly — by about 100,000 in just about two months time.
The details are coming (officially) by way of Andy Rubin who recently took to Twitter to share these details;
There are now over 500,000 Android devices activated every day, and it’s growing at 4.4% w/w
It just makes you wonder how soon before he tweets again with another update saying they are activating more than 1 million per day. Heck, at this rate, that will probably be within a year. Or maybe even within this year. Anyway, for those wondering just how 500,000 per day breaks down, take a look at some of these numbers.
Taking the starting point of 500,000 and breaking that down by hour, by minute and by second and we learn that Google is activating about 20,833 per hour, 347 per minute and 5.78 per second. Sounds incredible, nearly 6 devices every second of every day. Of course, while this all sounds great and happy, with as many Android smartphones (and now tablets) coming available around the world we would probably be more surprised if they were not growing at this rate. Either way one thing is clear — lots and lots of people are using Android.
