Acer Cutting Back on Notebook Shipments [Wanting to Clear Out Inventory Backlog, Acer Will Be Reducing its Netbook Shipments by 1 Million Units by 3Q 2011]

Acer has already cut back on its sales forecast for 2011. In line with the need to move inventory, the company will be cutting back on notebook shipments by Q3 of 2011.

Acer had been aggressive in shipping and marketing its notebook and netbook computers, but that seems to have been overshadowed by the popularity of tablet computers. Acer is already experiencing backlogs in moving their notebook and netbook computers, to the extent that the company is already dumping notebooks in some markets just so they could move stocks. Most of the models being cut back are netbooks, with Acer’s retail channels still having considerable volume on hand. Acer was said to have been too optimistic in the recent quarters, and shipped more netbooks to retail partners than they could sell. This time around, they plan to reduce shipments from 6.4 million units to just 5.4 million.

With this news, we probably shouldn’t expect any new Acer netbook models anytime soon, until the company is able to move all its old stock to make way for new models. At the rate that new tablets and netbooks from other brands are moving, though, we wonder if Acer would have to slash prices just so the older products would sell.
