Microsoft Still Skeptical About 3D Gaming

Microsoft Isn't Ready To Fully Support 3D Yet Because They're Not Sure If Customers Really Want It

Pretty much every game that’s announced for PS3 these days has support for stereoscopic 3D, whereas you almost never hear those words accompanying an Xbox 360 game announcement. According to Xbox senior product manager David Dennis, that’s because Microsoft still isn’t sure that there’s much value in making their games compatible with 3D TVs.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Dennis said that Microsoft hasn’t jumped on the 3D bandwagon yet because they’re still trying to figure out if customers actually want it.

“3D is an interesting space,” he said. “There was a big rush by some other folks in the industry to convince people they want to play in 3D. You can question the motivations of why they want to make everyone go buy a new TV perhaps, but I think 3D has to fit in a natural way where it fits with the gameplay.”

“Something we’re watching and wanting to understand from consumers is whether this is something they actually want,” he continued

Dennis also said that one of the big questions is whether or not the 3D actually adds anything to the gameplay, or if it’s just a feature consumers use once or twice before shutting it off. In other words, Microsoft’s waiting to make sure that 3D isn’t a fad before they make a commitment to it.

Still, even though they’re not convinced that 3D is a worthwhile endeavor just yet, Dennis says that they’d be willing to make the change if their customers begin demanding it. So, how about it? Do you want to see the Xbox 360 begin to show more support for 3D, or are you fine without it? Is waiting out the initial 3D rush a good idea for Microsoft? Post a comment and share your thoughts!
