Fring Updates iOS App, Gets Group Video Chat On The iPad Before Skype [Fring For iOS Updated, Goes To Version 5.1.1.2 & Brings Group Video Chats Along With iPad Optimizations]
We have recently been hearing some chatter regarding iPad video chatting coming from Skype, however it looks like rival Fring has updated their once iPhone only app and brought with it — support for group video chat.

Yup, the latest update from Fring has brought the app up to version 5.1.1.2 and it has arrived as a universal app with support for the iPhone, iPod touch and the iPad. The app is available for free, requires iOS 4.0 or later and in terms of the iPad, needs the iPad 2. But of course, that last part was a given as the original iPad comes without the camera.
Anyway, according to the changelog, this is what users can expect to see;
- NEW iPad optimized version!
- The 1st GROUP VIDEO calling app for iPad. Use it for Video chat on 3G/WiFi to iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch, Android and other smartphones.
- NOW 4 friends see each other at the same time.
- Fun drag & drop navigation. Unique combo communication with simultaneous voice/video + chat and more.
- iPhone now with BLUETOOTH support – I can hear you clearly now!
- Connectivity improvements so you stay connected.
- Bug fixes. It’ll be even smoother fringing now.
Bottom line, if you are sporting an iPad 2 and were hoping to get in on a group video chat, you may want to give Fring a second look. And nicely done, you will be able to chat with other mobile platforms. In other words, your Android toting friends will be just as welcomed. The Fring video chats as well as Fring-to-Fring calls remain free of charge. That aside though, there is also the option to call any regular (non-Fring) numbers however those come with an extra charge that will require the purchase of a FringOut package.
And lastly, for those worried about the video quality, Fring touts itself as having the highest quality possible;
“The HIGHEST quality Video Calls possible! fring’s video calling DVQ™ technology (Dynamic Video Quality) gives you the best video and audio quality possible by automatically and continuously adjusting your video call quality to match your connectivity.”
