HTC Desire From Telstra Australia to Get Stock Gingerbread
HTC Desire owners were disappointed when HTC announced they couldn’t fit Gingerbread into the Desire because of space constraints. HTC has since conceded, saying it will remove a few firmware additions to fit Gingerbread. But some mobile carriers are going for more drastic measures.

HTC Desire users on Australia’s Telstra network can expect something good in the next few days, as the network has announced an update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The news might be good or bad, though, depending on how you look at it. Telstra will be releasing an update, but without the HTC Sense user interface that HTC is known for. This means the Gingerbread update is essentially a vanilla installation without much of the customizations that HTC has developed for the platform.
Android enthusiasts who prefer stock or vanilla installations might find this good news, but those who are used to HTC Sense might find the update lacking. Unfortunately, it’s a compromise that HTC has to deal with, given space constraints in the handset that prevent the company from easily releasing an update without removing some firmware customizations.
