George Hotz aka GeoHot Now Works for Facebook

You Don’t Get to 750 Million Friends Without Hiring Some of the Greatest Talents Available

Known for his jailbreaks and hacks, whether related to iOS devices or Sony’s PlayStation, GeoHot seems to have been hired by Zuckerberg and Co. That’s right, Facebook appears to have employed George Hotz, although, at this time, it can’t be really confirmed.

The news comes from a Facebook status update from a newly created George Hotz Facebook profile. Sure, chances are we’re looking at the real thing, but, as always, this is just something that could have been fabricated to generate some buzz.

The Facebook status in question, dated June 22, says:

is Facebook is really an amazing place to work… first hackathon over.

That may very well be the honest-to-God truth there, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see Facebook employ some of the greatest minds out there capable to help Facebook undermine our privacy needs even further. After all you don’t get to 750 million users without making sure you get all the help you can get from qualified, talented personnel.

So why did Facebook hire GeoHot? Does it have anything to do with Facebook’s Project Spartan, which is said to target Apple’s App Store once it gets launched? Is GeoHot’s previous “work” with Apple devices important in any way for Facebook’s upcoming HTML5-based app store? We can’t really answer such questions just yet.

First of all Facebook’s Project Spartan is, so far, just a rumor which Facebook is trying to kill. Furthermore Apple doesn’t seem to be really affected by such a project anyway, not that they’d ever admit to that. So GeoHot’s involvement with Facebook will remain a mystery, and just a rumor, until Facebook will confirm it hired the famous hacker.

How do you Facebook users feel about GeoHot having behind-the-scenes accesses to this huge social network? Should anyone be worried?
