New iPod Touch By The End Of The Year? [New Reports Suggest That The Last Big Apple Rumor Holdout May Get A Revamp For The End Of This Year Too]

For those of you out there who’ve been following Apple’s dramatic reassertion into the electronics community since the iPod, you know there hasn’t been a whole lot of news out there regarding this humble little gadget that does so much. But now, new word has emerged that says the iPhone and the iPad may not be alone in a new version, and that the iPod Touch may get a new version by the end of this year after all.

Back when the first beta version of iOS 5 came out earlier this year, devoted Apple buffs went rummaging through the code with fine-toothed comb in hand, looking for newsy bits to pull from the gleaming guts of the internal operating language. iPad and iPhone got references…but no one could spot anything for the new iPod Touch, and with the supply issues around that time being what they were, many just shrugged and said, well, maybe next year. Until one Apple buff went a bit further and found something important.

Reportedly, in the depths of the “com.apple.fairplayd.N81.plist” file, there is indeed an iPod Touch reference. Two of them, in fact–listed as iPod 4,1 and iPod 4,2.

Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean “new iPod Touch” in the full sense, but rather possibly a revamping of the old one, which is a fair bet, considering that many of the earlier issues have yet to be resolved. And there could be some additions here–AirPlay leaps immediately to mind, or possibly some new Gorilla Glass frontage–to augment an already good quality system.

Speaking here as a regular iPod Touch user, I like its current setup just fine, so I have no problem with no radical redesign of the iPod Touch. New features are always welcome, of course, but the current design does the job and then some.
