Is Apple Looking To Double MacBook Air Order For July?

Some Estimates Peg Apple As Planning Buy Of Eight Million MacBook Airs For Third Quarter

Interesting news emerges of a possible big run-up in MacBook Air supplies ahead of the newest model’s launch. But some are already beginning to wonder if these estimates aren’t wildly out of place.

The current word says that Apple is looking to lay hands on just over eight million MacBook Air systems for the third quarter, which is reportedly over twice the quantity they took delivery on in the prior quarter.

Meanwhile, the total demand for MacBook Air in 2011 is now projected to be 15 million instead of the earlier 13 million, which is a fairly big hike no matter how you look at it. And indeed, this gives fresh credence to rumors that a new MacBook Air will hit right alongside the release of Lion, as well as talk of a July launch.

Plus, the third quarter encompasses back to school shopping, (especially considering Apple’s annual back to school sales promotion, which is a bit lackluster against previous years but still quite valid) as well as early birds looking to get their Christmas shopping done so they don’t have to fight crowds and possibly weather.

There are those, however, who find these numbers a bit hinky, especially given that the the eight million projection represents fully twice the number of total Macs sold period in the second quarter of 2011. And it’s easy to see where such a number could prove overly optimistic of an estimate, but it has to be considered that we’re looking at some major sales run-up here, with back to school and Christmas shopping in the pipe for the next few months. Downed economy notwithstanding, of course, but the concept applies.

So what do you guys think? Are there about to be a lot more MacBook Air models hitting the shelves for the declining part of the year? Or are we looking at some overconfident estimation? No matter what side you weigh in on, we want to hear from you! So head down to the comments section and  tell us what’s on your mind.
