Apple Posts MobileMe To iCloud Transition Guide & FAQ

Apple Confirms: iWeb, Gallery & iDisk Are Leaving & Mail, Contacts & Calendar Will Live On With iCloud

Apple, or more accurately, Steve Jobs took to the stage earlier this month during WWDC and announced that MobileMe was leaving (while poking a little fun at it) and announced it successor — the iCloud. And since that point there has been quite a bit of rumor and speculation as to which MobileMe services would be coming over and which are being put out to pasture.

Of course, Apple did offer a smaller bit that dealt with some of the transition from MobileMe to iCloud back on June 7th, however while informative — it still left quite a few unanswered questions. That being said, Apple has just posted an updated version of the “frequently asked questions about the MobileMe transition and iCloud” page.

And thankfully, they have spelled it out rather nicely and we now know which services will carry over to the iCloud. In short; Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Bookmarks, Find My iPhone and Back to My Mac will make the move to iCloud. As to the services that have been cut, those include iWeb publishing, Gallery and the iDisk.

Also, as we learned back on June 6th during the keynote speech, iCloud will also introduce a few new features such as iTunes in the Cloud, Photo Stream, Documents in the Cloud, automatic downloads and purchase history for apps and books as well as backup and restore.

Bottom line, despite the recent rumors — the iCloud will offer a place when you can login and check your .mac/.me email address.

Otherwise, the MobileMe service has already been closed for new accounts, however those already using the service can continue to do so until June 30, 2012 (or until they migrate their account to the iCloud). And lastly, for those with iWeb accounts or files on their iDisk — you may want to start looking to make sure you have local copies because once June 30th 2012 comes — they will be gone. Of course, you have some time as that is just over a year from now.
