Sony Ericsson Officially Outs The Xperia Ray & Xperia Active Smartphones, Both Coming In Q3 2011
Coming out of the CommunicAsia 2011 conference in Singapore, Sony Ericsson has officially unveiled a pair of Xperia branded Android smartphones as well as a few new Smart Extras accessories. The handsets include the Xperia Ray and the Xperia Active and as of now we are still waiting on word of pricing. That said, we are expecting both handsets to come available “globally in select markets” beginning in Q3 2011.

Breaking these handsets down, lets begin with the Xperia Ray (pictured above). This handset is will bring features to include a 3.3 inch (854 x 480) capacitive touchscreen display with scratch resistant glass, 1GHz processor, 1500 mAh battery and measure in at 111 x 53 x 9.4mm with a weight of 100 grams. In addition, the Xperia Ray will have a microSD card slot and ship with a 4GB microSD card in the box. In terms of the camera, there will be a VGA quality front facing camera as well as an 8.1 megapixel rear facing camera with the Sony Exmor R CMOS sensor, auto-focus, 16x digital zoom and 720p HD video recording.

Next up is the Xperia Active (pictured above), which as the name implies is “targeting consumers with an active lifestyle.” The Active will feature a 3 inch (320 x 480) capacitive touchscreen display with scratch resistant glass, 1GHz processor, 1200 mAh battery and a 5 megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom, auto-focus and 720p HD video recording. As for size, the handset measures in at 55 x 92 x 16.5mm and weighs in at 110.8 grams. Otherwise, the Xperia Active will ship with a 2GB microSD card as well as a sport stereo headset, arm case, wrist strap and exchangeable cover. Also worth noting for a handset that is designed for the active lifestyle, it is dust proof and water resistant and “uniquely incorporates wet finger tracking.”
In addition, both the Xperia Ray and the Xperia Active will arrive running Android 2.3 Gingerbread and sporting the expected features such as GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3.5mm headphone jacks.
And lastly, the Smart Extras accessories, these include a LiveDock and the LiveSound, which will both arrive alongside the handsets in Q3.
