Nokia N9 MeeGo Smartphone Officially Announced, Will Arrive Later This Year
Following up on the leaked information from yesterday, Nokia has officially unveiled their promised MeeGo smartphone. The handset arrives just as the leaked information said it would — as the Nokia N9, which some will recognize as the Nokia Lankku.

That being said, while the handset has been officially announced we still have yet to learn a few of the more important items — the price and release date, which as of now was left as how the handset “is scheduled to be in stores later this year” and that “availability and local pricing” would be “announced closer to the sales start.” In other words, nothing just yet.
With that, we did get the confirmation in terms of specs, plus the press images of the handset were released. And if we do say so ourselves, the handset has a rather nice look to it. But looks aside, it comes as a MeeGo handset which may serve to make you either love it or hate it.

The specs of the N9 Lankku include a 3.9 inch (854 x 480) AMOLED display which is made from scratch-resistant curved glass, 1GHz OMAP3630 processor, GPS, NFC, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, 3.5 mm headphone jack, microSD card slot and an 8 megapixel Carl Zeiss camera with auto-focus and HD video recording.
And for those wondering, according to the details we have received from Nokia, “this makes the Nokia N9 one of the best camera-phones ever produced.”

Otherwise, the N9 will be available with either 16GB or 64GB of internal storage, will ship in black, cyan or magenta and is also being touted as the “world’s first smartphone” with Dolby Digital ply decoding and Dolby Headphone post-processing technology. Lastly, Nokia has also replaced the home key with a new gesture based feature called Swipe. And not to be confused with the Swype virtual keyboard for Android, the Nokia version of Swipe allows the user to swipe from the edge of the display to go home.
