iPad 3 & iOS Apple TV Display to Beat Nintendo’s Wii U Release Date?

Apple Rumored to Launch iOS Powered TV Display in Fall; Is It a Threat to the Wii U Considering iPad 3 Is Also on Track for 2012?

A short while ago I told you why I think that Apple could soon enter the gaming business considering that in time, it has laid out, tile by tile, a path that puts it in a place where it could move anywhere it wanted in order to provide more entertainment to the masses that purchase Apple devices.

Apple has a huge content cow waiting to be milked by developers of all sizes, and at the same time, waiting to meet the needs of a few hundred million consumers. iTunes is packed with music, movies and TV shows, podcasts, books and apps. At least 50 million people also love games and while most of the games found of the games found in the App Store can’t compete against Xbox, PlayStation or Wii titles, the better the hardware running iOS gets, the more complex games we’ll find in the App Store’s games section.

That huge content cow is accessible from a few hundred million devices. These are iPhones, iPads, iPod touches and Apple TVs. In other words, Apple controls the hardware and the software and sells the experience to millions of consumers quarter after quarter. It makes perfect sense for Apple to move, slowly, and apparently silently, in the console business.

That’s, in short, why I believe gaming is an important next step for Apple, and today we discover one more rumored product that proves my theory. I am talking about an iOS-powered TV display, which is now rumored to hit at some point this fall. The device would have Apple’s Apple TV features built right into it, and it could be able to run all the iOS apps you love on an even bigger screen and have access to iTunes and the cloud. That’s a whole lot of entertainment that Apple could control. The TV display will be made for Apple by other OEMs, possibly Samsung and/or LG, and, if you think about it, it’s the logical future of the Cinema Display and the Apple TV as Cupertino could merge these products into a single device.

Now bind such a 2011 Apple TV with an even more powerful iPad 3, iPhone 5/6 and/or iPod touch 5/6, which are also coming at some point in early 2012, and you end up with a system that can offer lots of entertainment, video gaming included. Should Nintendo feel threatened in any way by such a combination? After all, let’s not forget that when not playing actual games, you would be able to use the iPad and the TV for other purposes, with the emphasis here on the mobility of the tablet. Whereas the Wii U is not exactly good for anything else but entertainment in your living room.

We’ll be back with more news about this new Apple TV version, since we’re yet to have it confirmed as a new standalone Apple product, even if the rumor originates from a former Apple executive. Would you buy such an Apple product?
