Update To Apple's AirPort Utility Indicates Possible New Devices

Recent Code Updates To AirPort Point To New Time Capsule & AirPort Extreme Devices

News slipped out through meticulous analysis of code in a recent AirPort Utility update, and the news points at some possible new devices to come out from Apple. Namely, a new Time Capsule and new AirPort Extreme devices.

The new Time Capsules would reportedly be fourth generation–if you’re keeping score at home–and the AirPort Extremes would get you to fifth. While all Apple wanted to say about the AirPort Utility update was that it resolved an issue that made them quit unexpectedly in the midst of getting set up, it quickly became apparent to those sifting through the ten meg downloads that there was a lot more going on in here than protecting against sudden and unexpected shutdown. Documentation appeared in the downloads for the new products, which at last report saw updates back in 2009.

What makes things even more interesting is that some reports suggest that Apple’s physical stocks of AirPort and Time Capsules has been running low of late, and usually, when we see Apple stuff get in short supply, it’s either because it’s desperately popular or because they’re planning a new launch. Some even look for the new devices to support iCloud, which makes plenty of sense, or offer other services like media streaming or wireless printing.

Naturally, that’s a pretty big leap of faith to take on the strength of a few lines of code and should be taken with the appropriate grain of salt, but considering all the changes we’ve seen come out of Apple recently by way of the World Wide Developer’s Conference, well, nothing’s truly out of line at this point.

So what do you guys think here? Think Apple’s got some new hardware in our immediate future, or is this a case of jumping at shadows by way of some unnecessary lines found in code? We welcome your thoughts down in the comments section, so head on down and tell us what you think!
