HTC Reverses Earlier Official Word, Says Gingerbread Will Be On Desire After All

Android 2.3 Will Now Be On The HTC Desire, According To HTC Itself

The tech world is a very strange place to be, folks. Our own Robert Nelson put out the word just yesterday that there was no Gingerbread coming for the HTC Desire. Well, apparently, enough of you were sufficiently incensed about this that HTC promptly hit their Twitter feed just a short while ago–thanks to the magic of time zones, in some places it hasn’t technically happened yet–and announced a total reverse course. Now, HTC is on record: oh yes, there will be Gingerbread.

No one’s quite sure just what triggered the reversal, whether it was a mass Twitter / Facebook uprising or just a word to the right people, but apparently, the big to-do is officially settled, and Android 2.3 will in fact be coming to the HTC Desire.

What’s odd was that, yesterday, the issue was one of performance, that there simply wasn’t enough memory on the HTC Desire to get Android 2.3 in play without making some sacrifices to the HTC Sense experience. Well, apparently, someone figured out a way to do it between yesterday and today, because HTC put out the word via Twitter that it was in fact going down. And even stranger, some earlier versions of the Desire were pegged as offering Android 2.3 also.

The how of the whole thing is still, as yet, unclear, but the word is current and good, at least until the next time HTC decides to hit Twitter and reverse course yet again.

It leaves us in something of a strange position here. Will they be putting more memory into the HTC Desire to accommodate the new operating system? Will they be accepting (and expecting us to accept by extension) diminished capacity as a result? Or have they found a more creative solution that had been eluding them until just after their official announcement? Many possibilities exist here, and HTC is staying mum, for its part.

What do you guys think spurred HTC’s about face? How do you think they’ll resolve the performance issues they themselves cited only yesterday when telling us there would be no Gingerbread? Head on down to the comments section and tell us what you think!
