Steam Offering Free To Play Games Starting Today
Valve announced free to play game support for Steam earlier today, and they immediately released five free-to-play titles to kick things off. This is a brand new thing for Valve, as before they’ve only offered pay to play MMOs through their digital distribution service (though some games like Guild Wars, which require a purchase but are then free are offered through Steam).

You can head over to Steam right now and download your choice of Spiral Knights, Forsaken Worlds, Champions Online: Free for All, Global Agenda: Free Agent, and Alliance of Valliant Arms. As well, starting tomorrow and with Spiral Knights running through Sunday with Alliance of Valliant Arms, exclusive in-game content will be offered each day for one of these launch titles in what Valve’s calling their “F2P game of the day.”
“The introduction of Free to Play games is another example of the constant evolution of Steam, said Valve’s Jason Holtman in the press release. “Free to Play games offer new game genres and game experiences for customers, while offering developers and publishers new revenue opportunities and the ability to reach customers in areas of the world where the traditional packaged goods model is less popular than F2P.”
The press release also stated that these free to play titles would take advantage of Steam’s existing micro-transaction backend systems that’s currently being put to use with Team Fortress 2. Which of these F2P titles are you going to be downloading – do any of them catch your eye? Let us know in the comments section below!
