HTC Makes It Official, HTC Desire Will Not Be Upgraded To Android 2.3

HTC Desire Users Shed A Tear, Android 2.2 Froyo Will Be The End Of The Update Line, Gingerbread Is Not Coming

It seems the time has to come for every Android smartphone, you know, they day when you learn that no future updates will be coming. And sadly enough, today is the day we learn that the HTC Desire will never be updated to Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Well, judging from the angry comments coming as a result of the announcement, we should say that the Desire will never OFFICIALLY be updated with Gingerbread. That said, the news comes by way of HTC and their official Facebook page where the cite reasons dealing with memory and the Sense user interface.

Our engineering teams have been working hard for the past few months to find a way to bring Gingerbread to the HTC Desire without compromising the HTC Sense experience you’ve come to expect from our phones. However, we’re sorry to announce that we’ve been forced to accept there isn’t enough memory to allow us both to bring Gingerbread and keep the HTC Sense experience on the HTC Desire. We’re sincerely sorry for the disappointment that this news may bring to some of you.

Personally, even as a Sense fan, I would much rather have Gingerbread and lose Sense. But on the flip side, we can understand that the Sense user interface is HTC’s thing and it seems to go without saying — they are not going to offer an update and leave that out. And while we can understand the disappointment as a result, we still have to poke fun at some of the Facebook comments.

A personal favorite in the comments, the guy who is complaining about not getting Gingerbread, but at the same time admitting that “the Desire was sold with not enough memory to start with.” And just for anyone wondering, that has also “seriously reduced the chances of me [him] getting another HTC.”

Of course, he does not seem to be alone in that sentiment. Numerous other commenters are complaining about not being upgraded and even threatening to never buy HTC again.

Bottom line, every device has an end of line and while it stinks — it still has to happen. Then again, why would you complain about not getting something that would likely cause your phone to perform worse. Hey, Gingerbread is nice, but a properly working Froyo should still be preferred.

What a joke, I have been running RCMIX S for a while now, and that’s Gingerbread with Sense 2.1/3.0.
If HTC say they can’t get Gingerbread and Sense 1.5 running on the desire, they are either lying or are just incompetent.
