E3 2011 Wrap Up: Sony's Elephant In The Room

Sony Apologizes For PlayStation Network Outage & Bounces Back With A Strong Showing Of PlayStation Vita

Sony had a rough few months leading up to E3: first was the whole scandal that saw Sony taking PS3 hacker George Hotz to court, and then having PSN attacked and taken down for over a month because of the lawsuit. The hackers made off with a lot of personal information, and left Sony scrambling to pick up the pieces.

It’s no wonder then that SCEA president Jack Tretton didn’t beat around the bush during Sony’s E3 press conference. He cut right to the chase, apologizing to third party developers, retail partners, and consumers for the outage. It wasn’t all gloom though, with Tretton saying that for the most PS3 owners have stuck by their brand – PSN usage levels are at 90% of what they were before the outage occurred. That’s definitely great news for Sony, but now they need to make sure this doesn’t happen again; that 90% isn’t likely to stick around through another massive attack like this.

With the awkwardness and obligatory apology out of the way, Sony moved along with their presser and started showing off some games. Naughty Dog stopped by to give us a live demo of Uncharted 3, Kobe Bryant showed us NBA 2K12 in action (which was also demoed with Move controls), and Irrational Games gave us a look at how Bioshock Infinite is going to handle with Move.

Sony had a solid lineup of games to show indeed, but the attention-getter of their conference was by far the reveal of the NGP as PS Vita. Yes, it’s a dumb name, but we got to see more of the PS Vita in action this year at E3, and it looks fantastic. Add to that the announcement that the PS Vita will be region free, and Sony is on their way to having the handheld the PSP should have been.

There was also some new PS3 exclusives announced, as well as plenty of awesome-looking multiplatform titles, so PS3 owners are advised to peruse the following list of Sony E3 news:

So did Sony gain your forgiveness after the apology from Jack Tretton and the strong showing at this year’s E3? Let us know how you feel about Sony post-E3 in the comments section below!
