Next iOS 5 Untethered Jailbreak Tool to Block App Piracy?
iOS 5 beta has already been jailbroken, the tethered way, on all iOS 5-compatible devices, sans the iPad 2, and it’s probably just a matter of time until the untethered jailbreak rolls out, which is the kind of jailbreak you’re always going to be looking for when it comes to breaking free your iDevices from Apple’s shackles.

Today however there’s a twist in this jailbreak-related story. Some hackers may be contemplating with the idea of blocking app piracy in their next jailbreak versions. i0n1c tweeted today:
The idea to create a jailbreak that blocks pirated apps is going ping poing in my head. Might be a good motivator to do the iOS 5.0 untether.
From where I’m standing that seems to be quite an interesting idea. We never advised you to go for jailbreak, unlock (or root) attempts on any of the devices out there, but we did remind you that, once you go down that road, you should think twice before using your jailbroken device to download pirated apps. Those apps exist in order to make money for those developers and motivate them to continue to develop more and more apps in the future.
Of course if i0n1c is going “ping pong” over this idea, that doesn’t mean all other hackers out there involved in jailbreaking iDevices would line themselves to this “new” policy. Not because they’d encourage app piracy, but because such an extra feature means an added workload for them. On the other hand I’m sure even Apple would unofficially appreciate such an added feature to upcoming iOS jailbreak tools, wouldn’t it?
A jailbreak that doesn’t offer free access to the App Store apps out there would also give the hackers some decent feedback regarding the actual numer of people that want to jailbreak their devices in order to use the other apps that can be installed on iDevices, the ones that are found in Cydia, and have never been approved for the App Store.
What about you, folks? Why do you jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch?

I jailbreak for piracy.
Definitely to install cracked apps.
For me the only reason to jailbreak is to install pirated apps. Wait, don’t get started. I do this because of absence of “trial” functionality in the AppStore. Sometimes the “lite” version isn’t available, sometimes you need to see the unlocked power of the application to make a choice – screenshots just won’t do. 99% of my pirated apps get deleted after a day of use (for official-to-be functionality I would suggest making week a limit). The remaining 1%? I buy apps in the AppStore – this time making a very informed decision.
I’ve got a good example – “OmniFocus for iPad” for insane $40. I’ve tried 6 other apps before decision to buy OF. All other apps were way inferior, so I bought the app which suited me best, the OF. Imagine if I tried these apps (which I found unusable) officially – 1) I would have to spend $50 more on developers that make not-so-good apps, thus sending a message “oh yes, this app is good, please continue”; 2) these money would have effectively gone to trash, since I had chosen another app for task management and only one app of this kind may be used on a daily basis.
Hope Apple would implement the trial functionality in the AppStore – that would eliminate the last reason to jailbreak for me (all the tweaks that I needed are already inside the iOS – good strategy, Apple).
Jailbreak features will be available in ios 5, so what’s the use of JB if pirated apps will be blocked?
There’s so much to jailbreaking than cracking apps. I use it for WinterBoard to customize themes, BossPrefs, emulators, etc. There’s so much you can do with a jailbroken iOS device
Jailbreak to trail apps, i’m not going to spend money on a app i delete within the hour of downloading. About 99% of the apps i downloaded ‘illegally’ are deleted within the first hour then others ill keep for few days then ill buy them because i want updates/support for that app.
Also i jailbreak for the extra features, truely BITESMS is without doubt the best app for iPhones, along with SBSsettings. These make it so much easier and enjoyable then opening and closing 3-4 apps saving about a minute at a time!
you’d think apple would wise up and add some toggles like sbsettings in to it’s notification center.. I have 5.0 on my phone and while it is a nice improvement there are more things i wish they would do.. like springflash.. it’s nice to be able to double click the power button and turn on the flashlight
1. you’re stupid to use pirated apps… there is no sure safe pirated app – hidden exploit code is abundant in pirated apps. you’re a fool if you think it’s safe.
2. there are many reasons for a jb other than pirated apps I jb for features not found on standard iOS bigger folders, smaller icons, 5×5 springboard, lockinfo, folders in folders, 3g unrestricted.
I don’t care if they block pirated apps or not if you want to be a moron that’s your choice. blocking it via the jb won’t stop people from doing it there will just be an app they can ssh to the phone to bypass whatever it is you do to block it… think about it if you’re intrepid enough to keep finding ways to jailbreak the phone you don’t think some hacker will find a way to bypass your blocking the ability to install pirated apps???? wise up spend your time focused on development and not on thwarting lame douchebags that feel pirating is smart… you’re not losing anything to them because they never had an intention of paying in the first place.
Go ahead and make a no pirating jailbreak, you will fall into obscurity while another hacker gets the full jailbreak and all the glory. Get off your high horse, you are hardly the only one in the world that can jailbreak it.
To those of you too good to pirate apps, good for you. If you want to pay for apps when you can get them for free, go right on ahead, just don’t complain about being broke again, because it’s your own damn fault.
I love how the same hypocrite idiots love to wag their finger at pirates, and almost all of them have pirated music in their idevice. Seriously take your inconsistent morality and shove it
Totally agreed with you!!!
Really? If you spend more than $500 in an iPhone, how hard is it to spend $1 for an app? Jailbreak is meant to make your phone customizable and add features than can only be offered through Cydia.
I’m up for it. No to piracy!
Personally, like it was said above, it would be a total waste of time as people won’t want to be limited. They jailbreak their Idevices to get around blocks that apple did and now your gonna give them a new block that would force us to turn around to another jailbreaker?
I personally sell jailbreak/unlock services and i get two clients… most of them want their phones unlocked but the rest all wants their apps free, its one of the major reason they jailbreak. If you want to stay legit then simply stay basic, do not do your jailbreak. It is far fetched to think that this will change much, all it will give is frustration and be a pain in the ass to users who will have to wait for a FULL jailbreak. I didn’t get iOS 5 because i wanted the jailbreak, i also love to be able to see a game and try it out, most of the time its deleted within the day and those games are expensive.
We all admire you for your excellent work in the domain, personally i think you are an awesome hacker that do a lot of the community, it would be spoiling your reputation and attracting fangs and barks if you would do something like that. Just stick with what works and please people. Apple will never be happy with Jailbreaks anyways even if you add that, so it is futile to do something like that since face it, peoples might think its a nice thing but nobody will be GRATEFUL as for those who would be angering by this, counts in the ten of thousands who have their devices jailbroken and wanted to use Installous.
All u guys are fools if Apple would have wanted to stop piracy all they have to do is take hackulo to court but believe it or not Apple makes more money because of piracy !!!
if u got some brains you’ll understand.
I just want an untethered jailbreak that offers customization
Totally agreed.
i originally jail broke for pirate apps until i found out what cydia was actually for but still i like to be able to use apps free as paying £300 + for a phone with limited function/downloads really gives me the jitters apple are as bad as Microsoft (xbox live charges)
PIRATE APPS FTW I WOULDN’T JAILBREAK WITHOUT THEM
maybe a charge for jail break or instalouse? ye no problem
I second that.
Years ago, i DID pirate apps. Before you chew my ear out over it, hear me out.
I live in Australia. The censorship out here is dogshit. There are some damn fine Poker machine apps developed by aussies that are not available in our app store. So unfortunately, pirating was the only way I could get them. I only pirated apps i did not have access to otherwise. If it was available in the aussie app store, I paid.
On the flip side, pirated apps are slow as, they crash randomly, and to update them you have to find an updated cracked version, so I stopped altogether.
Those with the “I’m too poor to buy apps” argument should really get a Free App Tracker from the app store, like Free App A Day or Appminer, or whatever. You can get legitimate apps for free, and good times are had by all.
The main reason I jailbreak is to customize the UI. Not for piracy or anything else really. (Come on now, dont say you aren’t a pirate if you have a GBA emulator with every ROM you can find. that is still piracy to some degree).
It would be nice to leave the choise at the consumers! Why do you else get the warning when adding hackulo or others? It’s up to you to pirate or not and lot’s of the pirated apps don’t have all features or all updates, so you in fact get a kind of trail app via the illegal road. Anyway don’t make a right-winged jb with restrictions if you want to stay true to the jb belief. And money to developers – i made a app you know how much apple keeps?? Don’t they have enough , more than microsoft! This all sounds like 1on1c is lobbying for a job like our former jb friend who works for Sony now!!
that wouldnt be a jailbraking….. more like release on parole…. no good for me. no good for nothing
Mr Derp says it for me. I’m in South Africa and I cannot get an app here that is available in the us and uk, the app is just a flipping game.
I can find it on the net, so the carrot it there, but I cannot buy it here. Forget piracy, I am willing to pay for it and THAT is why I am looking around the internet back allys in an attempt to get round the idiocy and found this thread.
Ever since Apple started with their iphones etc I have found their devices somewhat limited and way overpriced for what they can do, thanks to money mongering trolls in Apple. Every time I try perform a simple operation such as remove an unwanted app on my ipad I get frustrated by badly written software and then I’m still expected to bend over for those fools and take it like a man when trying to get a harmless app.
Apple has created a suppressive culture and suppressed people retalliate, any history book will tell you that. I’m all for app developers reaping the rewards for their work and will happily pay for them, BUT, I’m also all for hackers that figure out ways to help us break free from a suppressive culture.
By doing this Apple has created a monster that they soon will not be able to contain and the app industry will be a totally different place. Our place.
You can do extra effort to jailbreak and block piracy but apple still wouldn’t want us to jailbreak I think that’s apples job. To stop people from parating apps it’s true what some people said. before I jailbroke my device I bought some apps at a ridiculous pride and the app wasnt even worth it I deleted it like a minute later I jailbreak mainly for Cydia tweaks but I do have installious and also it’s true that most of the people calling us pirates have pirated music. With that said there always gonna be that hacker that has different ideas tnxxx to all the developers working hard on the jailbreak scene. I think apple stold alot of ideas from Cydia tweaks it’s great they made them smoother and put them in iOS 5 but shoul give the developers their credits.
On second thought I’ll change to Android instead since they can use cracked apps lol
Phone hackers have morals? They find exploits in code that doesn’t belong to them. Use said exploits to manipulate programs that allows them to do things that the company doesn’t want them to.
Get off your high horses, get your wagging finger out of my face. If you hate piracy that much, then stop opening the doors for the software to do it. I’d rather not jailbreak at all, if it means not suffering the indignation of a self-righteous hacker who decides to have a sudden outburst of ethics… Especially since its far too late for ANY of them to do so.
