E3 2011: Sonic Generations 3DS Will Be Completely Different From Its 360 & PS3 Brethren

All Sonic Generations 3DS Levels Will Be Platform-Exclusive, City Escape Level Revealed For Console Versions

It was just last week that Sega was talking about what will set the 3DS version of Sonic Generations apart from the HD console version, but at E3 they revealed that not only will it stand out, but that it will be a completely different game.

According Sonic Generations producer Takashi Iizuka, all of the 3DS levels will be platform-exclusive, except for one. “One important thing to say about the Nintendo 3DS version,” Iizuka said, “is that besides Green Hill Zone, which is the starting zone on all versions, all the stages on the Nintendo 3DS version will be different from the stages that are seen in the PS3 and 360.”

We already know that the levels in Sonic Generations 3DS will be specifically designed for the platform, but now we have confirmation that you won’t just be playing the 3DS version of a level from the console version. As well, Sonic Generations 3DS will be the only version that dips into pool of handheld Sonic games for stages to remix and polish.

“For the PS3 and 360, none of the stages we’re selecting are going to be from the handheld,” Iizuka continued. “However, on 3DS we’re looking at picking stages from handheld as well.”

That little piece of info alone makes a Sonic Generations 3DS purchase more than tempting, especially when you consider that the handheld Sonic titles have provided a consistently solid experience throughout the years, while the console titles have struggled since the jump to 3D. For my money, remaking any of the levels from the Sonic Advance series would be an excellent move.

That’s not to say that the console version isn’t looking great itself, of course – as we can clearly see from the trailer below, Sonic Generations on PS3 and Xbox 360 looks like it will provide players with a hefty dose of awesome in its own way. The trailer previews the remixed City Escape level, which fans will remember as the high-speed opening to Sonic Adventure 2 (made even better by an equally great and boundlessly corny song). City Escape is only the second Sonic Generations level to be revealed, and I know I’m not the only fan who has fond memories of Sonic Adventure 2 – City Escape in particular.

So, give the trailer a watch (or two), and then head down to the comments section and let us know what level you’d most like to see remade in Sonic Generations; personally, I’m gunning for Marble Zone. Sonic Generations is out on Xbox 360, PS3, and 3DS this November.
