E3 2011: Super Smash Bros. Wii U Not In Development Yet

Super Smash Bros. Wii U Still A Long Way Off, Production Won't Start Until Kid Icarus: Uprising Is Finished

If you ask me, Super Smash Bros. is one of the best franchises of video game history. Regardless of what I think, the series has made Nintendo a huge amount of cash, so it really shouldn’t have come as much of a surprise to anyone when Nintendo announced that it will be coming to Wii U during their E3 press conference yesterday.

It seems that Satoru Iwata shares Shigeru Miyamoto’s impatient personality though, as the announcement of Super Smash Bros. Wii U came before the game was even in production. If fact, development of the game is still a long ways off, with series director Masahiro Sakurai saying that work on Super Smash Bros. Wii U won’t begin until Kid Icarus: Uprising for the 3DS is finished.

“We really shouldn’t have announced it for the general public at this timing,” Sakurai tweeted after Nintendo’s presser (translated by Andriasang). “But since we have to assemble staff, we made the notice. The future will change depending on the strength of the gathered developers.”

So, don’t expect Super Smash Bros. to be a launch title on the Wii U, since Kid Icarus: Uprising doesn’t even have an official release date yet (the only thing we know is that Uprising will be out before the end of the year). It’s probably for the best that Smash Bros. won’t be there when the Wii U launches, though – after all, wouldn’t you want another excellent Smash Bros. experience instead of one that was hastily thrown together in 6 – 12 months?

Are you excited for this new Super Smash Bros. game? How do you think Smash Bros. will utilize the Wii U’s touchscreen controller? Let’s not forget about the 3DS version, either – will you be picking that up? Sound off in the comments section!
