E3 2011: Ubisoft Details Ghost Recon Future Soldier, Unveils Ghost Recon Online
In a day where we’ve seen Microsoft and EA already give their E3 press conferences, Ubisoft is getting in on the action as well. A big chunk of their press conference this afternoon was devoted to all things Ghost Recon, with Ubisoft Redstorm creative director Tommy Jacob showing off an extended demo of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, and announcing a new Ghost Recon multiplayer experience.

The demo that was shown follows the Ghost team as they drop into a Nigerian village to combat a group of militants. The soldiers effortlessly navigate the streets of the village, which are populated by terrified and wounded villagers, being careful to take out the militants and spare every civilian life they can. It isn’t long before the Ghosts make it to the militant compound and begin clearing it out as they make their way to their target – a man being held captive by the militants.
After freeing the man, the Ghosts have to get him out alive, something that’s made difficult by a group of militants and a number of helicopters blocking their exit. Doing their best to keep the man alive, the Ghosts brave an endless stream of gun fire before finally getting to cover and calling in an air strike, which wraps up the trailer with a huge explosion and a lot of death.
“Synchronized kills, the most refined cover-based system out there,” Jacob said, “Augmented reality to gather game-changing intel, intuitive team-coordination system, and an unprecedented range of weapon customization called Gunsmith. This is Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.”
The display and the demo were certainly impressive, but perhaps the most exciting part of Jacob’s presentation was the reveal of Ghost Recon Online, a new multiplayer game that will be free-to-play. There wasn’t much revealed, but Jacob said that it the title will be multiplatform, and that Ubisoft was preparing “links and connections” that would share achievement and save information between Future Soldier and Ghost Recon Online.
There’s no solid release date for either title yet, with Ghost Recon: Future Soldier having the vague release window of 2012. As always, we’ll keep you updated on both Ghost Recon: Future Soldier and Ghost Recon Online as more details become available.

I’m hoping this comes out 2011
I am a huge GR fan, and I’m not sure even I can continue to look forward to this game. It should have released this year before Gears 3, Battlefield 3 & MW3. With all three of those epic sequels coming out before Future Soldier, GRFS has no chance of being relevant. What a pitty, it could have dominated the consoles this summer. Big mistake Ubisoft…
