E3 2011: Minecraft To Hit Xbox 360 Exclusively

The Popular Indie Sandbox Title Makes The Jump To Console Title This Winter

You’ve been hearing a lot about Minecraft here for some time now, and with good reason. Minecraft is one of those oh-so-rare success stories in which a guy with an idea took on his own marketing and created a sandbox title that people genuinely wanted to play. But now, this success story has stepped up a notch with the announcement at E3 that Minecraft will be making the jump to consoles: specifically, Xbox 360.

Set to arrive this winter (in time for Christmas shopping? Possibly.), Minecraft will be using the Kinect to help you build your world, punch your trees, and fend off the Creeper hordes in a giant grandiose sandbox.

It doesn’t seem, at this stage, that there will be any significant modification to anything other than the controls, taking them from PC to Xbox 360 and Kinect, so if you were already enjoying Minecraft on PC, you may not have a whole lot of reason to make the jump to enjoying it on Xbox 360. But for those of you who haven’t tried Minecraft on your PC–or just don’t much care for PC gaming, and there are plenty of you out there–you’ll be able to get in on the fun pretty much in its original state with Kinect.

The question here is, will there be sufficient impetus to fuel comparable success on the Xbox 360? Will there be a sufficient base of folks only on Xbox 360 willing to take on this abundantly sandbox title that haven’t already had their fun on PC?

It’s a good question, and as is so often the case with questions like this, I open the floor up to you. Would you be interested in playing Minecraft on Xbox 360? Head on down to the comments section and spill the beans–Creepers need to be put paid to, after all.

I would totally play MC on Xbox. I Thought FortressCraft was going to do this, but It failed horribly.

    2. derpy says:

How did FortressCraft fail horribly? It’s only in its first “chapter”, as DJ Arcas is is calling it, and has already sold over 250,000 copies.

    3. SteveO says:

I’d definitely play Minecraft on my Xbox. Can you imagine what more you can potentially throw into the game putting on a platform console? I’m not saying anything needs to be added to the game, but putting Minecraft on a console allows for potentially more additions plus a potentially larger revenues from purchasable additions (not sure what you can add for purchasable content, but the guy who created it seems pretty creative so I’m sure he can figure something out if the game goes down this route on the Xbox). It seems like a smart move for the game.

    4. A very good point. It’s tough to tell just what all could go into this, let alone what we’ll see in the final version. But more about this will likely slip out, so you know where to keep your browser pointed, right SteveO?

    5. Well, he may have meant “fail” in terms of gameplay, derpy.

    6. Aaron taylor says:

I think it’s a excellent idea and I would defonatly buy it!

    7. John Robinson says:

I think they need to have it for the xbox 360 controller, i dont want to always have to get up and punch air to cut down trees or mine through the earth. i want to adventure the world which sitting on my butt and using the controller in my hand.if anything i think they should put have it be compatible with both the controller and kinect. it will give then a bigger audience for those that dont have a kinect and for those like me who do have a kinect but never use it.

    8. That’s also a good possibility.

    9. MinecraftHomie says:

I would absolutely play minecraft on xbox! I have played on my mac for the past year and i am still enjoying it. Experiencing it on xbox would be really cool and especially unique with the kinect experience. I am looking forward to this winter.

    10. MinecraftHomie says:

being able to choose between kinect or controller would be a really good idea. people probably wouldn’t buy a kinect just to play minecraft on their xbox anyway so both options would be a smart feature

    11. Minecraft playah says:

will minecraft have the same feature just like the on PC? for example like mods and cheat mods for people to use

    12. Ethan says:

do you have to use a kinect?

    13. Nothing I’ve seen so far says you’ll have to.

    14. I doubt it–later word on this one said that it wouldn’t be a straight port, so something will likely be absent, or something else added. It’s possible, though.

    15. MinecraftNerd says:

Id love to play this on Xbox, but if it’s for kinect, then I’m not buying it. I think it would just be more fun to play with a controller in my opinion

    16. Cameron says:

I personally love Minecraft, i totally would buy it for the xbox360. Luckily i got Kinect last Christmas. So thats gunna be awesome!
