New Crop Of Hackers Targeting Sony

Lulzsec, The Group That Recently Hacked PBS, Taking Aim At Sony, Another Attack On The Playstation Network Possible?

You know, the whole hacking thing in general has been making a lot of news lately. From the endless litany of Playstation Network Down updates we’ve done here to the other various attacks on Sony properties, Sony has been hack bait for most of the last two months. And now, things look like they might be stepping up a notch for Sony once again thanks to the hacking group known as LulzSec, who is planning a campaign against Sony systems once more.

Dubbed Operation Sownage–short for Sony Ownage, and unless I miss my guess there really should be a P in there somewhere–it represents what seems to be a currently ongoing campaign against Sony, featuring several tweets taunting Sony via LulzSec’s Twitter account, including the downright ominous: “Hey @Sony, you know we’re making off with a bunch of your internal stuff right now and you haven’t even noticed?”

While LulzSec doesn’t claim responsibility for the Playstation Network hit that crippled the network for weeks–they actually denied it, issuing a tweet which read: “You Sony morons realize we’ve never attacked any of your precious gaming, right?”–they are apparently up to something.

Just what “internal stuff” was made “off with” is as yet unknown, and Sony doesn’t seem to be any too eager to spill the beans (frankly, I wouldn’t look for Sony to confirm this even if it were happening) about anything having to do with any hacking.

LulzSec made an appearance earlier in the week, hacking PBS and displaying a story that claimed Tupac Shakur was still alive and living in New Zealand, in the same area that housed other presumed dead rapper Biggie Smalls. This proved to be a crock, of course, but gave PBS no end of fits as its news show Frontline generally doesn’t publish clearly fake news.

Considering that Sony’s spent months–and millions!–getting its network back up to snuff following the first attack, it’s enough to make me wonder just what tricks LulzSec has up its sleeve, and whether or not the Playstation Network is, once again, at risk. This could mean nothing, of course, and we’ll have to keep a watch out in coming days to see if LulzSec means to take a run at Sony at full power.

So what do you guys think? Is LulzSec the next great hacker army, or is this a tempest in a teapot that will go nowhere? Head on into the comments section and tell us what you think about these new developments.
