Nintendo DS Lite Price Drops To $100 [Nintendo Sets MSRP Of Bare-Bones Nintendo DS To $99.99, Also To But Mario Games In All-Red Boxes]

Nintendo 3DS doesn’t do anything for you? Or maybe it’s just too expensive at $250? Nintendo has just slashed the price of the old trustworthy Nintendo DS Lite. That’s the “old school” Nintendo DS, without any DSi downloadable games or anything. Just a stock, no-frills Nintendo DS. You can now pick it up for $100.

While the old Nintendo DS Lite is missing a lot of the features of the other DS revisions, and doesn’t hold a candle to the Nintendo 3DS, I imagine that that the $100 pricepoint, it’ll be mighty appealing to parents, who may more willing to pick this one up for the kids now. And it’s not like there isn’t a plentiful amount of great games out there for the DS.

Nintendo of America announced the price cut in a press release issued today. In addition to the price cut, they’ll also be packaging six popular DS Mario titles in red boxes. This is supposed to make it easier for consumers (parents) to identify the family-friendly Mario games.

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said in the release:

From the moment it launched, Nintendo DS Lite hit a sweet spot for consumers in terms of value, experience and fun. This new price point will introduce Nintendo DS Lite to even more consumers, and the new red packaging will make it easy for them to find their favorite Mario titles.

The Nintendo DS is one of the most successful game systems in the history of electronic video gaming, with Nintendo claiming that 48.9 million systems sold to happy gamers across the globe.

Officially the price for the DS Lite drops June 6, so you may not see the price reflected in retailers until then. Just in time for E3, oddly enough.
