Rumor: Sony NGP's Real Name Surfaces

Rumors Say Sony May be Planning to Reveal the Official Name of NGP at E3 - Are They Playing it Safe & Sticking With PSP 2?

Sony’s successor to the PSP has been called the NGP for many months now. In fact, it’s been called the NGP for so long that I forgot that wasn’t its name. But the rumor mill’s been a-churning, and this time it brings us a possible official name for the NGP that Sony’s planning to reveal at E3. Head after the break to find out what it is.

Sources tell the folks over at Games Pundit that the NGP will be getting re-named “PS Vita,” next week, and supplied the E3 proof sheet from above as, well… proof. “Vita,” as some of you may already know, is Italian for life, which may be a clever little gab at the fact that no one outside Japan has a PSP and this is meant to get Sony back in the handheld game.

I hate to say it, but I think the name Vita is just a bit too stupid for my tastes. But the fact that Sony could potentially be naming the NGP something wacky like Vita shouldn’t be that much of a shocker, as corporations always seem to struggle with what to name their consoles. Even though you’re used to it by now, when Microsoft revealed that they’d be naming their console the “Xbox,” I’m willing to bet that more than a handful of you thought that was lame.

As well, let’s not forget that Nintendo’s Gamecube – a pretty unexciting name itself – was once codenamed “Dolphin,” and now we have the Wii, a name that has managed to annoy me for five years now. Atari fell victim to the same curse with the Lynx and the Jaguar, and I think it might be best that we stop there before we have to deal with Tiger’s Gizmondo or Nokia’s N-Gage.

In any case, take the rumor with a grain of salt. Whether the NGP is going to be renamed Vita or not, it’s likely we’re heading toward a official name announcement at E3, so keep it tuned to TFTS and we’ll be sure to let you know when that reveal happens.
