Motorola Droid Bionic to Feature OMAP Processor & Gingerbread? [Motorola Droid Bionic Redesign to Include TI OMAP Dual-Core Processors, qHD Resolution & Android 2.3.3; Release Date Still an Enigma]

The Motorola Droid Bionic, one of the four original 4G LTE Android smartphones made official at CES 2011, which we’ve seen in Las Vegas back in January, was not yet launched by Verizon as Motorola decided to give it a major makeover to make it more user-friendly.

The smartphone was not canceled, as it was briefly believed a few months ago, but merely postponed for a later date, although at this point we have no idea when the device will actually make it to stores. But we do happen to have an idea regarding the improvements Motorola has in the works for the Droid Bionic.

One major change is suggested by a recent benchmark test that revealed the fact the Droid Bionic will come with a PowerVR SGX 540 GPU, which is not characteristic for the NVIDIA Tegra 2 platform. In fact that particular GPU matches apparently a bunch of TI OMAP processors, the 4430 and the 4440, so it looks like the Droid Bionic will either sport an OMAP CPU or that Motorola is just testing it on this upcoming LTE smartphone.

Other important modifications include a 960 x 540 qHD display, and Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread, although we can’t argue that we didn’t expect any of these to be part of the Droid Bionic refresh considering how most new Android handsets from Motorola will come with qHD displays and run Gingerbread right out of the box.

Motorola is yet to comment on the future of the Droid Bionic, so until the phone does make it to stores we could see it star in a bunch of rumors and leaks so stay close, either via Facebook or by following our feed for more Droid Bionic coverage. And while we’re at it, is anyone still waiting for the Droid Bionic? Or have you purchased a Samsung Droid Charge or LG Revolution instead?

As long as Verizon still has an unlimited 4G data plan I’m willing to wait for whatever Motorola releases to the marketplace. I’m still enjoying my MotoDroid1 but I’m ready for a 4G handset.

I’m with ya TallTony. I really love my DX. I’ll wait for a dual core 4G Moto device. I will be really ticked if they drop the unlimited data plans. Unfortunately, my market will not likely see 4G until late 2012.

I work for Verizon and I have been told the tiered plan (like AT&T) is coming soon. I am hoping to hold out until the Bionic comes out but as of now the best phone is the Thunderbolt. I got the DX right now, but im scared to wait until the Bionic comes out bc I dont want to get stuck with the new plan.

Have been impatiently waiting but now may wait for the Samsung Galaxy S II on Verizon after hearing how that phone may blow away the Bionic.

Still waiting. My contract was up in January 2011 and I was eligible for an early upgrade since like November 2010 or so. But I’m still sitting curbside with my little Bionic flag waving in the air waiting for my hero to come from behind the race, swoosh past all the other 4G competitors, and win the ultimate smartphone race – at which point I’ll get my hot little hand on it.

You see, all this waiting for the Bionic and all it’s teasing rumors coupled with the desperation to get rid of my BlackBerry Storm have sort of driven me to a case of mild insanity.

Come on Motorolla and Verizon! Just let ‘er loose already.

  • Droid Guy

I just bought the Droid X2 (fast as heck BTW) but my other 4 lines will all be up over the course of the next few months. So….yeah, I will also get the Bionic when it’s finally released.

  • Dale

Yes, I’m waiting on the Bionic…I’ll be giving my son my Droid-X to replace the Milestone he currently has. It won’t be long before he’ll want a Bionic also…
