GE Solar Powered Carports Available in Connecticut [GE's Solar Powered Carports Charge Your EV Using Power from the Sun]

If I have one complaint against electric vehicles, it’s that they still contribute to a considerable carbon footprint when you plug them into the grid. One solution is to charge them using solar powered chargers.

General Electric‘s latest project involves installing solar-powered chargers in carports in Connecticut. The solar-powered carports incorporate photovoltaic cells on their roofs, and charging stations alongside the parking spaces. The carport actually serves multiple purposes. For one, the roof will provide shade to your vehicle while it’s parked and charging (and from the rain, in case of inclement weather). Secondly, of course, the roof provides enough surface area for the solar cells.

GE has partnered with Inovateus Solar in creating the carports, which can charge up to 13 EVs per day. According to GE, any excess power will be driven back to the grid. If there is a deficiency of solar-generated electricity, then the GE EV Solar Carport can draw power from the grid. Of course, not all slots in this carport have EV charging stations, to accommodate those of us who are still using gas- or diesel-guzzling vehicles.
