Is Apple Working On An A5 MacBook Air? [Reports Emerge Suggesting That Apple May Have A Completed Test Model Of A MacBook Air Running An A5 Chip]

Remember how, just about a week ago, our own Kevin Schram brought us the story from Intel saying that there was next to no chance that Apple was planning a version of the MacBook Air that didn’t come with Intel inside? Well, there are reports emerging suggesting that they’ve done just that already, and that a test version is actually roaming around.

The word emerges from what’s being described as “anonymous sources” within Apple–and aren’t those the best sources, really?–that says not only has Apple already had a MacBook Air made that doesn’t pack Intel chips, rather an A5 chip, but that the new version actually performs better than expected, and was manufactured by the folks at Quanta Computer.

This is a strange bit of news that has massive implications, starting at “absolutely none at all” and working all the way up to “Apple is plotting to overthrow Intel forever” followed by evil laughter. Just because Apple’s done it–assuming they even have done it, anonymous sources don’t have a whole lot in the way of accountability–doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re planning on mass-producing it, though it’s entirely possible that they may, and frankly, it makes sense that they would so as to use economies of scale and buy in bulk. That doesn’t in the slightest mean we’ll be seeing A5 MacBooks out there, or that we won’t be seeing them alongside the current crop of Intel-driven MacBooks, or that Intel will be thrown out of MacBook Pros. But possibilities abound, and some even wonder if the upcoming WWDC will play host to new MacBook Airs with new and somewhat unexpected processors.

What do you guys think about this one? Sound like a little more Internet-style rumor mongering? Or is it possible that we might see some new chips coming to the MacBook Air line? Is it as out of line as Intel seems to think? Or will the shelves be sharing space? Hit the comments section and tell us where you think this all is going.
