Spotify Considering Partnership With Facebook

European Music Giant Spotify May Connect With Facebook To Stage Its US Launch

Facebook and music; the two just kind of go together, don’t they? Cookies and milk, mice and cheese…lots of other great pairings. But Facebook doesn’t have a whole lot of musical presence these days, but that may be about to change as reports emerge suggesting that Spotify is looking to expand outward from Europe into the United States, and it wants Facebook to back their play.

According to those same reports, Spotify could be launching a service on Facebook within the next two weeks, though that particular function will only be enabled in countries where Spotify already has a presence. For them to turn on the lights in the United States will require Spotify to go through the gauntlet of music labels here, meaning we Stateside will probably see activation of the service much, much later.

The way it’s set to be set up proves a complete partnership in its own right, as Facebook will add Spotify functionality directly to its site, adding Spotify to the left side of every user’s main page. You’ll have to install some software on your local machine to use it, though, but once you do, you’ll be able to get your friends in on whatever track you happen to be listening to at the time. Even more, you’ll also be able to get in on Spotify’s premium service, which costs ten pounds sterling a month in the UK and ten euros a month in the rest of Europe. The free option will still be available, but you only get ten hours a month free.

There won’t be any money changing hands initially, according to reports, but what will happen is Facebook will get a whole lot more people coming in to use Spotify services and Spotify will get access to that massive Facebook user base.  And considering that, just yesterday, we saw Facebook was looking to get Netflix on board providing additional social tools, it’s certainly suggesting a path in mind for Facebook as entertainment and social networking hub.

So what do you think of Facebook’s plans? Think there’s anything they’re missing? Or do you think they’re trying to do too much? Hit the comments section and tell us what you think about Facebook’s current direction!
