Sega: Sonic Generations 'Abandoned' On Wii

Sonic Generations Skipping Wii Release Because Sega Wants All Versions In HD, Could It Eventually Come To Project Cafe?

Even though Sonic had a reinvention of sorts with Sonic Colors on the Wii, Sega’s not showing any love to the Nintendo console with the release of Sonic Generations. In an interview with Nintendo Power (as reported by CVG), Sega’s Takashi Iizuka said that Sonic Generations won’t be showing up on the Wii because the console doesn’t support HD graphics.

“The primary goal for the console versions of Generations was re-imagining the series’ classic zones in vivid, high-definition graphics,” Iizuka said. When you’re looking for “vivid, high-definition graphics,” the Wii definitely isn’t the place to find them, but that doesn’t mean that Sonic Generations would look particularly bad on the Wii – just look at games like Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. They managed to look pretty darn great in standard definition.

In any case, Sega has their mind made up. “The Wii hardware wasn’t a good fit for that concept, so we abandoned development on that, and decided that for our Nintendo audience, we would make a fresh start with a Nintendo 3DS version of Generations,” Iizuka added.

So at least there’s some hope for Nintendo consoles, even though the 3DS version of Sonic Generations will be much different than its console counterparts. I wouldn’t count Nintendo’s home consoles out just yet either – with the reveal of Project Cafe (which is rumored to support HD graphics) coming next month, there’s always an outside chance that we could see Sonic Generations ported to the console some time after release.
