PayPal Already Sues Google for Google Wallet; NFC-based eWallet Was Just Announced Today

PayPal Hits Google With New Lawsuit; It’ll Probably Not Stop Google Wallet Plans to Proceed As Scheduled

Just earlier today we showed you more details about that rumored NFC-based eWallet payment system coming to Google, now called Google Wallet, and it looks like the new Google product is already pissing off the competition. In a surprisingly fast blow PayPal decided to sue Google on the same day it launched Google Wallet and Google Offers. The reason? Alleged misappropriation of company secrets.

PayPal’s lawyers are definitely worth commending for this extremely fast lawsuit. They must have been writing the document while watching Google announce the product in a sort of a strange and awkward live lawsuit-writing style.

Kidding aside though, it looks like two of the key people that appeared on stage today at Google’s event, Stephanie Tilenius, Google’s Vice-President of Google E-Commerce and Osama Bedier, Vice-President of Google payments are both former PayPal employees. PayPal claims that Tilenius shouldn’t have hired Bedier in the first place and that Bedier himself has shared “company secrets” with Goolge.

Bedier did say on stage today that:

“I’ve been innovating and pushing the limits of payments for the past decade. I joined Google because I believe we’re on the verge of a major shift in payments.”

At the time people certainly wondered who the guy is and what has he done for the past decade for Google. But it looks like he was a PayPal employee from 2002 to 2011 and he was even actively taking part in PayPal’s dealings with Google’s Android team. That’s quite an intriguing history for the guy that’s part of revolutionizing the way people will pay for stuff in the following years and we’re certainly interested to see where this lawsuit is heading.

The Google Wallet initiative is certainly not going anywhere as Google can’t afford not to pioneer this technology. So it will be interesting to see whether PayPal can stop Tilenius and Bedier from actually being part of Google’s NFC payment system or not really, and we’re certainly going to keep tabs on this new lawsuit between giants for you.
