David O. Russell Leaves Uncharted Movie [The Film Adaptation of Uncharted: Drake's Forture is Given a Fresh Start with the Departure of Writer & Director David O. Russell]
A few months ago, Uncharted fans seemed to be ready to go on an all out offensive against David O. Russell, the man attached to write and direct a film adaptation of the first title in Naughty Dog’s beloved game series.

If you don’t remember the details, we don’t blame you. They were ugly, disheartening, and just otherwise undesirable. First, Russell made it clear that he wanted Mark Wahlberg play Nathan Drake, while many fans wanted to see Firefly star Nathan Fillion in the role. Next, it was revealed that Russell was switching up Nathan Drake’s backstory, changing him from a treasure hunter to an antiquities cop that meets regularly with world leaders and museum curators.
So, if you’ve played the games, you can probably understand why fans were upset. Those who were worried that the Uncharted film was destined to go down in the annals of history as another terrible video game movie can finally exhale, though, as Variety is reporting that David O. Russell has quit the Uncharted film.
No specifics were given, but it’s said that Russell and Sony parted ways due to creative differences over the project. This probably means that Sony saw what Russell was trying to do to Drake’s Fortune and put an end to it. Probably – remember, nothing’s confirmed, and these are just the musings of someone happy to see Uncharted saved from movie mediocrity.
Regardless of what the reason is, there’s one thing we know for sure: Russell leaving means that a new director needs to take his place, and when one does, they’ll be bringing a different cast and a different script with them (hopefully – you never know with video game movies).
