Sprint Motorola Photon 4G Coming to Sprint on June 9?
Motorola’s hottest Android handsets have been calling Verizon their home for the last couple of years, as Moto was pretty shy when it comes to launching such devices with other U.S. carriers, let alone international ones. As for Windows Phone 7 smartphones, Moto has not “invented” such a device yet, but today some of these things are about to change.

Sprint and Motorola have announced a joint June 9 media event in which they could announce the first superphone hitting Sprint stores. What could this handset be? Common sense indicates that we’re looking at a 4G WiMAX Android device, either a Droid X2 or an Atrix 4G version that will work with Sprint’s network. But the invitation for the event, available below, suggests that WP7 Mondrian-style user interface, so we could be witnessing the announcement of the first Motorola Windows Phone 7 in the following weeks?
I, for one, I’m rather inclined to believe that Motorola will bring an Android handset to Sprint stores, as there was never any clear indication that Moto was ready to deploy WP7 handsets. Not to mention that there’s no WP7 exec invited to join Sprint’s CEO Dan Hesse and Motorola’s CEO Sanjay Jha at this special event. Furthermore, the Atrix 4G headed to AT&T earlier this year, in a clear move made by Motorola to expand to other carriers with hot, flagship devices is also an indication that other carriers are going to get high-end Moto handsets soon.

The phone that’s rumored to hit Sprint already has a codename, the Photon 4G, and we’re looking at a 4.3-inch qHD touchscreen display, dual-core Tegra 2 processor and 4G WiMAX support. The phone could also be a Droid X2 version that would pack CDMA and WiMAX support although it would make plenty of sense to see the Motorola Atrix 4G launched with various worldwide carriers in the future, Sprint included, especially since Moto wants to sell more Laptop Docks in the future. The Photon 4G, or the MB855, has already gotten the Wi-Fi Alliance certification, which revealed the name and model number of the handset without actually telling us anything about the specs of the phone. (On comparison the Droid X2 is model number MB870 while the Atrix 4G is model number MB860, so are we looking at an Atrix relative here rather than an X2 Sprint version?)
We’ll be back with more details about the Photon 4G in the near future, so keep following us on Facebook or via the feed for more updates on Sprint’s first Motorola handset.
