Google Wallet NFC Payment System to be Launched Tomorrow at Special Media Event

Google has scheduled a special event for tomorrow, May 26, at 12:00 PM EST in New York and many people assumed we’re looking at the official launch of Google’s upcoming NFC payment system.

And according to This Is My Next… that’s exactly what’s going down tomorrow in New York. Google will launch “a test of “contactless” payment through a mobile device – so customers will be able to just tap a special device and pay with their phone in stores at POS,” according to the screenshot below, which clearly represents a leaked document originating from The Container Store.

We have no actual details about the upcoming Google service, which will apparently be called Google Wallet, but it’s safe to say it will involve some of the hottest Android handsets that are to be launched with NFC support in the near future.

Don’t get too excited about being able to turn your smartphone into an eWallet as this will not happen over night! The Container Store will start using the new payment system on September 1 even if Google will test the NFC Wallet this summer. By fall we’ll probably see a bunch of Android smartphones capable of NFC support, maybe even WP7 and iOS devices. Not to mention that these first stores embracing this near field communication payment technology will have to get their own tech installed first, the NFC readers that would make possible the connection between your phone and that boring cash register.

Google will offer us plenty of more details tomorrow and we’ll certainly be there to tell you all about this new Google NFC payment system. And we’re certainly interested to see whether the new iPhone 4S, or iPhone 5, will come with NFC capabilities on board later this fall. Anyone specifically excited about NFC payments?
